Terps Fall in Home Contest with No. 2 Wisconsin

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The University of Maryland volleyball team fell in three sets to No. 2 Wisconsin at the XFINITY Center Pavilion on Friday night (10-25, 21-25, 9-25).

The Terps played in front of a packed house as 1,938 Terps showed their support in the XFINITY Center Pavilion. The crowd at The Pavilion was the fourth-largest crowd in the venue's history

After dropping the first set of the match 25-21, The Terps fought to within two points in the second set with a chance to even the match. Sam Csire led the Terps with five kills and an ace in the second set to lead the comeback effort, but it came up just short as Wisconsin took the second set 25-21.

The Terps fell behind in the final set by a score of 22-6 and added a couple of late point to attempt a comeback, but they were unable to cut the deficit as they fell in the final set by a score of 25-9.


Maryland dropped to 15-12 with a 5-10 Big Ten record, while the second-ranked Badgers advanced to 23-1 along with a 14-1 conference mark.

How It Happened

Set 1: Wisconsin 25 - Maryland 10

  • Wisconsin began the set on a 16-1 run to start the match
  • The closest Maryland came to closing the gap in the set was 12 points as Wisconsin closed out the first set with a 15 point advantage
  • Sam Csire led the Terps with five kills in the first set

Set 2: Wisconsin 25 - Maryland 21
  • After falling behind 8-2, Maryland traded runs during the early portion of the match.
  • Anastasia Russ, Samantha Schnitta, and Eva Rohrbach each had kills to cut the lead to 11-6.
  • Rohrbach added another kill, followed by Csire to cut the Wisconsin lead to 12-8.
  • The deficit hung around four or five points until Wisconsin went on a mini run and took a 19-12 lead
  • Maryland battled back thanks to a total team effort to close the lead to 23-21
  •  Wisconsin did just enough to hold onto the set and took a second set 25-21.
  • Sam Csire led the Terps with five kills in the set as well as a service ace to help them battle back in the set.
  • Anastasia Russ, Samantha Schnitta, and Erin Morrissey each had a pair of kills to join Csire in leading the come back in the set

Set 3: Wisconsin 25 - Maryland 9
  • Wisconsin began the set with a 10-1 run before a Maryland timeout.
  • Wisconsin controlled the set and built a 22-6 lead.
  • Maryland picked up points thanks to two kills by Csire and another by Rohrbach, but it wasn't enough to close the deficit as they lost the final set.
Numbers to Know
  • 15: Sam Csire accounted for over half of Maryland's kills in the match, as the senior delivered 15 of the Terps' 27 kills
