Terps Score Six In Eighth-Inning Rally, Take Down UMBC, 12-6

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland (5-7) rebounded from a tough weekend at the Cambria College Classic, scoring six in the eighth inning to blow out UMBC , 12-6, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Maryland needed a big response in the bottom of the eighth as UMBC (4-4) tied things up in the top-half thanks to Leewood Molessa, who already hit a two-run homer in the sixth, came through with a game-tying two-run double with two outs. The Terps did just that, scoring six in the eighth as Nick Lorusso got the scoring started with an RBI double. The big hit came off the bat of Matt Woods, already having singled home a run in the third, who cleared the bases with a three-run triple.

The third inning was a big one for the Terps, down 2-0 at that point after UMBC scored twice in the top-half, as Maryland scored five runs, all five coming off RBI singles.
Kevin Keister, Woods, Eddie Hacopian and Bobby Zmarzlak recorded four-straight run-scoring hits, Keister with the biggest, starting things off with a two-run knock into left field.

Other than giving up two earned runs in the third, Maryland starter Kyle McCoy was solid on the mound, limiting the UMBC offense to two hits in a career-high four innings of work. Logan Ott came in relief of McCoy, finishing the job as he gave up four earned and four hits in five innings for the Terps.

Maryland had five hitters record multi-hit games as Woods went 2-for-3, reaching base four times, driving in four and scoring two runs. Hacopian had a three-hit day, driving in two for the Terps. Keister ended up finishing 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored and Lorusso came through with two doubles, scoring three runs and driving in one.

Molessa led the Retrievers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, the two-run homer and the two-run double keeping the Retrievers in the game late. UMBC recorded eight hits in the loss.
