Box Score ANNAPOLIS, MD — The University of Maryland volleyball team notched a victory in its first-ever match against Old Dominion, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-17) Friday afternoon in its first match of the Kristen Dickmann Invitational at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis, MD.
On the block, the Terrapins found great success swatting swings from the Monarchs, as Maryland accrued XX blocks in just a three-set affair. Freshman middle blocker
Eva Rohrbach (four total blocks) and senior middle blocker
Anastasia Russ (five total blocks) led the blocking brigade.
A balanced and efficient offensive attack propelled Maryland to the sweep, as five different Terps amassed five or more kills, led by
Samantha Schnitta's 11 kills.
How It Happened
Set 1: Maryland 25 - Old Dominion 19
- Thanks to a kill from Samantha Schnitta and a solo block from Sydney Dowler, the Terps jumped out to an early 3-1 advantage.
- Eva Rohrbach made her presence felt early in the set, finishing off three consecutive rallies with a kill and two blocks, leading Old Dominion to call an early timeout with a 7-3 Maryland lead.
- ODU leveled the score at 8-8 with a 5-1 scoring run with a pair of kills and a service ace from Alice Munari.
- The Terps responded with a 5-1 run of their own capped by a Jonna Spohn service ace, reextending the lead to 13-9.
- Shortly thereafter, Maryland put together a 6-1 run to pull away, putting the score at 19-12 in favor of the Terps.
- Schnitta and Anastasia Russ combined for a block assist to clinch the set, as the Terps never trailed.
- A strong Terrapin front line accumulated six blocks in the opening set, with Rohrbach picking up three rejections. The Monarchs were limited to just a .103 hitting percentage in the frame.
- On the other side, Maryland swung .400 with 12 kills and just two errors. Five different Terps picked up multiple kills in the frame, with Schnitta and Rohrbach each collecting a trio of kills.
Set 2: Maryland 25 - Old Dominion 21
- The Terrapins and Monarchs traded the first six points of the set before a pair of Sam Csire service aces gave Maryland a 5-3 edge.
- A small 3-0 run featuring an Anastasia Russ block and a kill from Csire put Maryland up 11-8 in the set, as Maryland held the lead for the remainder of the frame.
- In the set, Old Dominion never strung together three consecutive points.
- Maryland swung efficiently in the second stanza, producing a .441 hitting percentage with 18 kills.
Set 3: Maryland 25 - Old Dominion 17
- Maryland continued its momentum with a 3-0 run to open the set, featuring a Lilly Gunter service ace.
- After the Monarchs pulled the set to within a point, Maryland powered ahead with a 9-0 run with a pair of Anastasia Russ kills to create a 16-6 advantage.
- The Terps kept their foot on the gas pedal the rest of the way, never letting Old Dominion within eight points in the rest of the set.

- 2,468: Sydney Dowler's career assist total continued to climb toward 2,500, as she dished out 34 helpers to put her career number at 2,468.
