Terps Tie Purdue, 0-0, in Big Ten Home Opener

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, UMD – Thanks to a late-game save by Liz Beardsley, the Terrapins (3-2-5, 0-1-1 B1G) tied the Purdue Boilermakers (3-6-1, 0-1-1 B1G), 0-0, in the team's Big Ten home opener. Maryland had a number of good looks in the game, but they couldn't find the back of the net.

The Terps finished with an impressive 17 total shot attempts. Ava Morales and Peyton Bernard were responsible for 11 of those shots, including multiple close misses by Bernard that hit the crossbar.

On the defensive end, Beardsley and Maryland's talented back line only allowed seven Purdue shots in the team's sixth shutout of the year. In the first half, the defense cut off the Boilermakers entirely, preventing any shot attempts.

Purdue upped the pressure in the final ten minutes, pressing near the goal box for the first time all game. But when the Boilermakers' Emily Mathews kicked one to the right bottom corner, Beardsley tracked it and timed her dive perfectly to make the save, preventing Purdue from taking a late-game lead.

  • McIntyre notched a shot attempt in the early minutes of the second half, but it was saved by the Purdue keeper.
  • The Terps defense came up big after a Purdue set piece in the 57th minute as the Boilermakers pressured with a flurry of close misses in the box.

Coach Nemzer's Take
"We tried to switch a few things the last 10 minutes, trying to get some numbers up high. I don't like playing things safe, I wanted to put more numbers and they attacked the last 10 minutes. You know, kudos to them for getting a couple of late shots off. But I thought we were good tonight, so I'm proud that we stood tall. We talked about standing tall in those last 10 minutes and I thought we did that."

Up Next
