Stetson Outlasts Terps, 2-1, In Extra Inning Heartbreaker

Box Score DELAND, FL – After holding Stetson without a baserunner into the sixth inning, Maryland suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the host Hatters on Sunday. The Terps finished the weekend 2-2 and are now 5-9 overall.

Stetson scored the winning runs on a fielding error as it had two runners in scoring position.

Maryland scored in the top of the ninth inning to take a 1-0 lead as Diamond Williams drove in the go-ahead run to break the tie with an RBI ground out to score Bailey Murphy
In her return to her home state, Bri Godfrey started in the circle and retired the first 16 batters she faced, carrying a perfect game into the sixth inning. She tossed six innings, allowing one hit and one walk before giving way to Courtney Wyche

The Terps' hits came from Megan Mikami, Mazie MacFarlane and Sammi Woods. Mikami was the only player in the game to record multiple hits.

Stetson (6-9) totaled just two hits in the contest despite coming away with the victory.

The game was the second of the weekend between the two schools. The earlier matchup was postponed in the fifth inning due to rainy conditions while the Terps were ahead and will not be made up.

Breaking Down The Action

  • Bri Godfrey, who was pitching in her home state, retired the first 16 Stetson batters in a row. Stetson was able to break up the perfect game with a single to right field in the sixth.
  • Mazie McFarlane hit a single in the fifth to give the Terps their first base runner since the first inning, but the Terps weren't able to bring her home
  • Wyche comes in to pitch in the seventh for the Terps and strikes out two batters.
  • The Terps started the 8th with a runner on second.  Sammi Woods with an infield hit gives the Terps the bases loaded.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Wyche was able to work out of trouble as she pitched around a runner on third with no outs and was able to get two huge strikeouts to extend the game.
  • In the ninth, Diamond Williams hits a ground out to first but scored the first run of the game for the Terps and helped take the lead.
  • Stetson earned a walk-off win by scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
