COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Coming off a season-opening win, Maryland opens its home schedule, as it hosts Stony Brook on Sunday. The game will be the first meeting since the two programs met in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, a 2-0 Terps' victory.

The Terrapins opened their 2024 campaign on the road against Lehigh, picking up a 2-0 win. The Terps opened the scoring thanks to Kennedy Bell, to take a 1-0 lead. The goal was also the first collegiate goal for Bell, and was assisted by Ava Morales who picked up her first collegiate assist. The second goal was scored by Delaney DeMartino, who scored her first goal at Maryland after transferring from Loyola (MD). Ellie Egeland picked up the assist, which was the freshman's first college assist as well. Liz Beardsley made seven saves in the game, giving the senior her seventh clean shutout in a Maryland uniform.
Series History - Stony Brook
- The Terrapins and the Seawolves have met three times in the all-time series, with the Terps holding a 3-0 record. The last time the two teams met came in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, a 2-0 win for Maryland. The victory over Stony Brook back in 2012 also marks the last win for the Terps in the NCAA Tournament, with the 2012 season being the last appearance for the Terps in the NCAA postseason.
- In the 2012 meeting, Becky Kaplan opened the scoring for the Terps in the 85th minute. A Stony Brook turnover in the defensive third led to the goal by Kaplan, who fired a shot from just outside the box into the bottom left corner. Three minutes later, Hayley Brock doubled the lead for the Terps. A cross from Kaplan fell to Brock, who finished it off for the final 2-0 scoreline. Maryland led in overall shots in the game, taking 25 to Stony Brook's five, while Maryland also held the advantage in corner kicks nine to one.
Hayley brock scored the second goal in Maryland's 2-0 win over Stony Brook in 2012. The game was the last time the Terps won an NCAA Tournament game.
Season-Opening Success
- In Maryland's 2-0 win over Lehigh, the Terps extended their unbeaten streak in season openers to eight. In those eight games, the Terps have a record of 5-0-3.
- Dating back to the 1995 season, the Terps are 21-4-5 in season opening games. The streak started on Sept. 3, 1995 with a 6-0 win for Maryland over Virginia Tech in College Park. In season openers away from home, The Terps are 9-3-2 dating back to 1995.
- The Terps also hold an unbeaten streak in their last seven home-opening games. The streak began on Aug. 18, 2017 with a 2-1 win over Drexel. In these seven home openers, the Terps have a record of 4-0-3.

Newcomers Make Their Mark
- Seven players made their Maryland debuts in its win over Lehigh on Aug. 15. Transfers Brooke Tracey (Bucknell) and Delaney DeMartino (Loyola (MD)) both played in their first games as Terps,, with Tracey getting the start.
- Five freshmen got their first taste of collegiate action. Ellie Egeland, Emily Lenhard, and Taryn Raibon each got the start for the Terps in the game. Kate Hawley and Ella Bulava also made their college debuts in the game, with both making cameos off the bench for the Terps.
- In addition to making her collegiate debut, Egeland picked up her first-career assist. Egeland assisted Maryland's second goal of the evening, crossing the ball into the box to set up DeMartino. The goal was also the first goal for DeMartino in a Maryland uniform.
Loyola (MD) transfer
Delaney DeMartino made her Terrapins' debut in their 2-0 win over Lehigh on Aug. 15. DeMartino came off the bench and scored the second goal of the game for the Terps, her first in a Maryland uniform.
A Game of Firsts
- It was not only a game of firsts for Maryland's newest Terrapins, but many of its returners as well.
- Kennedy Bell opened the scoring for the Terps with a right-footed shot in the 24th minute. The goal for Bell was her first collegiate goal. Bell made the move to winger in 2024, after playing as a right back in 2023. Bell finished the 2023 season with one assist while playing primarily as a defender.
- Ava Morales delivered the assist to set up the opening goal by Bell. For the junior Morales, it marked the first assist for the junior midfielder. Morales was the leading goal scorer for the Terps during the 2023 season with three.
- Tahirah Turnage-Morales got the start for the Terps at center back, the first start for the defender in almost two years. Turnage-Morales missed the entire 2023 season due to an injury, and saw her first action for the Terps since Oct. 23, 2022 at Purdue. Turnage-Morales' last start as a Terp came back on Oct. 20, 2022 in a road game against Indiana.
Kennedy Bell opened the scoring for the Terps in their season-opening win. The goal for Bell was the first in her collegiate career.
Scouting the Seawolves
- Stony Brook comes into this game after opening its season with a 2-1 win over Colgate. Gabrielle Côté opened the scoring for the Seawolves, putting the team up 1-0 in the 6th minute of the game. Colgate would even the game later in the first half, scoring in the 34th minute. Just after halftime, Aneta Sovakova broke the deadlock with a goal in the 48th minute. The Seawolves would hold onto that one goal lead for the rest of the 90 minutes to get the season opening win.
- The team's leading returning goalscorer is Reilly Rich. Rich led the Seawolves with six goals in 2023, followed by Linn Beck and Côté with four. Beck is the returning leader in assists, picking up four in 2023. Luciana Setteducate is next, getting three assists last season.
- In goal the Seawolves return goalkeeper Nicolette Pasquarella. Pasquarella started in all 18 games in 2023, making 74 saves in 2023 with a save percentage of .771. Pasquarella got the start in Stony Brook's win over Colgate, going the full 90 minutes in front of goal and making five saves.
