COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland men's tennis team recorded its first victory in over a month with a 6-1 victory over Coppin State today. The Terps (3-9, 0-6) improve to 3-2 against non-conference opponents in their third match in eight days. Maryland won five of six singles matches and earned the doubles point to highlight its victory.
The Terps recorded five consecutive singles wins. Junior Larry Chou (Rockville, Md.) opened the match, defeating Henock Terefe by a score of 7-5, 6-1. Freshman Chris Chiu's (Columbia, Md.) win over James Montgomery, 6-0, 6-3, improved his team-leading win total to five victories for the season. Luan Nguyen
(Tumun, Guam) recorded his second win in four matches with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Reshard Kellicci. Freshman Peter Harjes (Woodbury, N.Y.) and junior Dan Kenshalo (Gaithersburg, Md.) also recorded decisive wins this afternoon.
In doubles action, the duo of Chiu and Nguyen lost a close match to Terefe and Kellicci, 9-8. The Terps, however, bounced back to win the remaining two matches and win the doubles point. Harjes and sophomore Jon Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.) shut out Montgomery and Charles Spencer, 8-0 to win the No. 2 spot. Chou and Kenshalo defeated Jorge Cajigas and Khari McKie by a score of 8-1 to clinch the doubles point.
The Terps will close out the regular season this weekend as they host their final two matches of the season. Maryland will face No. 5 Duke on Saturday, April 15, at 11 a.m. The following day the Terps will host No. 19 North Carolina at 11 a.m. This weekend marks the final in-conference matches during the regular season. Both matches will be played on the Cole Field House Tennis Courts.
