NORCROSS, Ga.- The University of Maryland men's tennis team lost to NC State, 4-0, in the play-in round of the ACC tournament today. The Terps' loss marks the end of their season, but the Wolfpack advances to the first round of the tournament.
The Terps were forced to play with five players, due to a back injury sustained by freshman Peter Harjes (Woodbury, N.Y.) before the tournament. In doubles action, freshman Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) and sophomore Jon Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.) lost at the No. 1 spot to Eric Jackson and Keith Salmon, 8-2. At the No. 2 position, juniors Luan Nguyen (Tumun, Guam) and Dan Kenshalo (Gaithersburg, Md.) lost to Brad Kilgore and Brian Cowman by an identical score of 8-2.
In singles play, junior Larry Chou (Rockville, Md.) faced Eric Jackson at the No. 1 position, but lost, 6-0, 6-3. Ryan Boward defeated Luan Nguyen at the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 6-2, to end singles play. Maryland forfeited the No. 6 singles match.
The Terps complete their season with a 3-12 (0-9 ACC) record. The Wolfpack improves to 11-15, and will face the No. 1 seed, Duke, tomorrow at 3 p.m.
