On McLinton — He has spent three season silencing critics who suggested he didn't belong in the ACC and now enters his final collegiate campaign as one of the best all-around guards in the league ... he is a wonderful natural athlete whose strength and strong upper body allow him to play much "bigger" than his listed height ... he has played the point guard position with aplomb and has also seen time at the off guard ... this year, he may add some time at the small forward ... offensively, he is at his best driving to the bucket, where his solid frame makes him hard to knock off course ... in the last two years, he has proven an excellent point guard, running the Terps swift, full-court show with a deft hand.
As a Junior — Started all 29 games ... he was the team's third leading scorer at 11.8 points per game, its fourth leading rebounder at 4.9 boards a game, and its top assist maker at 5.3 assists per game ... his assist average was the sixth best in the ACC ... his team-leading 78.1 percent free throw shooting was fifth-best in the league, while his 999 minutes was the second most on the Terps and the l0th-best total in the ACC ... he had one of the best games of any collegian last year when the Terps visited Cameron Indoor Stadium to play top-ranked Duke ... in that game, he scored 25 points (on 10 of 14 field goal shooting) and dished for 11 assists in 39 minutes ... in fact, in Maryland's three games against the Blue Devils last year, McLinton averaged 20.3 points, 8.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds a game ... he scored in double figures in 18 games and dished for at least seven assists in 10 games ... he had several outstanding performances besides his exploits against Duke ... at N.C. State, he totaled 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
As a Sophomore — Played in all 28 games, starting 23 ... early in the season he switched between both guard positions, but when Walt Williams was injured midway through the year, McLinton became the Terps starting point guard ... his development at the point was a major factor in Maryland's surprisingly successful 16-12 campaign ... he scored in double figures eight times, rebounded in double figures once and dished for double digits in assists one time ... he scored a season high 21 points against North Carolina ... his season-high 10 rebounds came at West Virginia, where he had a season-high seven offensive boards ... his 12 assists against N.C. State was a career best and the second best game total in school history ... after taking over for Walt Williams at the point, McLinton averaged 7.4 points, 5.2 assists and only 4.0 turnovers a game . his 123 total assists led the 1990-91 Terps, while he was second on the team in steals (39), fifth in scoring (7.8 ppg) and seventh in rebounding (3.4 rpg) ... he shot 43.7 percent from the field and 68.6 percent from the line . a stress fracture in his left leg forced him from the line-up ... he missed the rest of the season, using the spring semester to rehabilitate the leg ... in his six games of active duty, however, he showed tremendous promise ... he opened his collegiate career with an eight point, seven-assist performance against Delaware State ... two nights later, against Augusta, he scored a season-high 10 points, going eight of nine from the line ... for the year, he averaged 3.7 points and 2.8 assists a game .
High School - Played at Springbrook High School ... he led SHS to a 43-6 two-year record and one state championship (1987-88 season) ... in his first year of varsity he started at power forward, averaged 12 points a game and led the team to the state title ... then as a senior, he was moved to point guard, where he directed the offense while scoring 19.5 points a game and adding seven rebounds and five assists an outing ... he also led the team in steals, field goal percentage (.550) and free throw percentage (.750) ... he was named to the Montgomery Journal's all Metropolitan team and was a second team selection on the Washington Post's all-Met team ... McLinton has given all-new meaning to the term beginners luck: In his first year of varsity basketball (1987-88), he led Springbrook to the state title, then in the fall of 1988, his first season as part of an organized football team, he led Springbrook to the state football title ... in that football championship game, played at Maryland's Byrd Stadium, he returned an interception 99 yards for the clinching touchdown ... he played his high school basketball for Coach John Barrett, a Maryland graduate ...
