Coming to College Park from Allegany Community College (Cumberland, MD), the quiet, hardworking "Speedy" made an immediate and impressive debut for the transfer junior . . . Luring him to Maryland turned into being quite a move by Driesell as the 6-6 forward was called on early to play and as Lefty said, came through with just a most outstanding contribution . . . When Derrick Lewis had to move into the center position, this gave Jones the opportunity to move into playing forward and quickly a starter ... He played in all 37 games and started 20 ... He averaged 26.9 playing minutes per game . . . Scored 264 points (7. 1 avg. per game) and pulled down 155 rebounds (4.2) . . . His single game high was 19 vs Holy Cross and his 10 rebounds vs Dayton was high . . . He scored in double figures in 14 games ... He played 41 minutes in the overtime win over then #2 ranked Duke.
At Allegany, Jones was an Ail-American choice on the NJCAA All-American team ... He rewrote the season and career scoring records at Allegany last season and was honored as the teams' Most Valuable Player . . . His single season scoring record was 829 points, a 23-point per game average . . . His career scoring title total was 1302 points as he had scored 473 points his first year at Allegany. Last year, he also set the season mark for field goals, 313; foul shots made, 203; and foul shots attempted, 259 . . . His 513 career field goals tied the school record ... He also was the leading rebounder with 328 for 9. 1 per game. Nicknamed "Speedy", Jones was the leading scorer and rebounder on his Oak Hill (WVA) High school team that was 2 1 -5 his senior year ... He averaged 22 points and 1 1 rebounds his senior year ... He was named to the Converse All-America team and was a first team selection on the West Virginia class AAA All-Star team.
