ON MASSENBURG - Came into his own a year ago as the team's leader both on and off the floor ... he is a likely nominee for all-ACC and All-America honors this year and certainly will be watched closely by the professional scouts ... this year, he will undoubtedly see action in all of the three frontcourt positions ... he has worked very hard on his outside shot and even mentioned to teammates that he has developed "three point range" ... whether that is or is not the case, the majority of his action will take place in the paint, where his size and tremendous strength can serve him best ... no question he will be asked to assume a large portion of the leadership responsibilities for the team given that he is one of the Terps two seniors ... truly leads by example, excelling equally on the court and in the classroom ... Massenburg was honored last year as one of the Maryland student athletes who earned a semester grade point average of 3.0/4.0 or better and was selected to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
AS A JUNIOR Started every ballgame and was the team's leading scorer (16.6 points per game) and its leading rebounder (7.8 rebounds a game, tying with Jerrod Mustaf for team-high honors) ... he led the team in scoring 12 times and in rebounding 16 times and in both categories in the same game eight times ... he opened the season with a game-high 26 points against Texas Christian and closed it with a game-high 21 points against North Carolina in the ACC Tournament; in between, he hit for a career-high 30 points against Georgia Tech and scored at least 20 points on six other occasions ... eight times he posted double-doubles (double figures in points and rebounds in the same game) ... in the ACC, he ranked in the Top 10 in four categories — rebounding (4th overall), field goal percentage (.550, 4th overall), scoring (7th overall) and blocked shots (0.9 per game, 9th overall) ... for his trouble, Massenburg was named to the All-ACC Third Team as selected by the Associated Press and as a honorable mention All-ACC pick by the Atlantic Coast Sports Writers Association ... in tournaments, Massenburg made it a clean sweep of the honors, earning MVP and all-tournament at the Freedom Bowl Classic and all-tournament at both the Sun Bowl Classic and the ACC Tournament ... in fact, he was the fourth leading vote getter on the ACC All-Tournament ballot and the only player on the all-tournament first team not from Duke or North Carolina, the two teams in the finals ... in that tournament, Massenburg averaged 19.5 points and six rebounds a game ... best games: 27-point, 15-rebound, one block outing in a narrow loss to Louisiana State; 20-point, 13-rebound, two block, 44-minute performance in an overtime loss to Virginia ... some other impressive numbers from the season: 13 of 20 from the field against Maryland-Baltimore County; 12 of 19 from the field against Georgia Tech; 12 of 13 from the line against Texas Christian; career-high seven blocks against Maryland-Eastern Shore.
AS A SOPHOMORE Sat out the fall semester — seven games — that season, then returned to the court with a vengeance ... scored a career high 25 points (on eight of 11 field goal shooting), grabbed five rebounds and blocked four shots in his first game back against South Carolina ... averaged 10.1 points per game — one of five Maryland players to average in double figures — and grabbed 5.3 boards an outing ... numbers dropped off slightly in ACC action, nevertheless at season's end was generally regarded as one of the conference's comers and he fit the bill well as a junior ... twice he grabbed a season high 11 rebounds and nabbed 10 on one other occasion ... played in 23 games, starting 13 and averaging 27 minutes a game ... scored in double figures 15 times and led the team in scoring against South Carolina (25) and North Carolina State (16) ... led the team in rebounding eight times ... grabbed an offensive rebound and scored the ensuing layup with nine seconds to go against Clemson to put Maryland ahead for good.
AS A FRESHMAN Sat out of action during the 1986-87 campaign, so his freshman season was 1985-86 ... was only the third player ever to start at center as a freshman under Coach "Lefty" Driesell ... played in 29 games, starting eight ... had season-highs of 14 points against Towson State and nine rebounds against Randolph-Macon.
HIGH SCHOOL Sussex Central High School ... averaged 17.5 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks per game as a senior, riding those numbers to All- America mention by Associated Press, USA Today and the Richmond Times-Dispatch ... was all-state as a junior and senior and twice was named all-district and all-region ... also lettered in track as a hurdler and high jumper and in football as a tight end and safety.
