COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland men's lacrosse coach Dick Edell announced the signing of seven high school seniors to national letters of intent to begin play with the nationally-ranked team for the 2001 season.
J.R. Bordley (Vienna, Va./Landon School), Paul Gillette (Millersville, Md./Severna Park), Dan LaMonica (Lutherville, Md./Boys' Latin), Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), Jeremy Pastula (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown), Dave Wagner (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Lee Zink (Rowayton, Conn./Darien) have all signed on to wear the red, gold, black and white of Maryland.
Bordley is a 5-6, 145-pound attackman from the Landon School, the number one team in the Washington Metropolitan area last spring. He is the son of Landon coach Rob Bordley, and was a wide receiver on Landon's championship football squad.
Gillette is a 5-10, 165-pound midfielder from Severna Park High School, the 3A/4A Maryland state lacrosse champion. He also was a wide receiver, defensive back and kicker for the Anne Arundel County champion and state semifinalist football squad.
LaMonica is a 5-10, 165-pound attackman from Boys' Latin High School, the MIAA semifinalist. He was a member of the under-19 gold medal winning United States lacrosse squad last summer. He will join his brother Mike LaMonica, a sophomore on the Maryland lacrosse team.
Passavia is a 6-1, 190-pound defenseman from Ward Melville High School, the New York State 'A' lacrosse champion. He was a two-time Empire State Games selection, from the powerful Long Island region. At Maryland, Passavia will join his brother Willy, a freshman midfielder for the Terps.
Pastula is a 6-0, 180-pound face-off specialist from Yorktown High School, the New York State 'A' semifinalist. An Empire State Games participant from the Hudson Valley Region, he helped capture the bronze medal.
Wagner is a 6-2, 195-pound defenseman from Severna Park High School, the 3A/4A Maryland state lacrosse champion. He also was a linebacker for the Anne Arundel County champion and state semifinalist football squad.
Zink is a 6-3, 185-pound defenseman from Darien High School, a perennial Connecticut state championship contender. He is also a defenseman on Darien's hockey team.
The University of Maryland's 2000 men's lacrosse schedule features games against nine teams ranked in the Top 20 of the final 1999 STX/USILA Men's Division I Lacrosse Poll. The Terps will also play host to the 2000 ACC Men's Lacrosse Tournament on April 21 and 23, and the NCAA Final Four, on May 27 and 29 for the eighth time in the last nine years. The Terps open the regular season on Feb. 27 against Mount St. Mary's
