Women's Lacrosse Defeats No. 17 Syracuse

March 13, 1999

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland sophomore attack Jen Adams (Brighton, Australia) scored a career-high five goals and added three assists to lead the top-ranked Terrapins to an 18-8 win against 17th-ranked Syracuse Saturday afternoon at the Artificial Turf Facility on the Maryland campus. It marked Adams' fourth consecutive game where she has scored at least a point. Adams was just one of four Terrapins to score multiple goals. Maryland improves to 4-0 overall while Syracuse falls to 0-2. The Terps jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as Maryland sophomore attack Tori Wellington (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) would score two of her three goals on the afternoon, including the first goal at the 2:58 mark. The Orangewomen charted their first goal of the game at the 19:24 mark off a Lauren Brady free-position opportunity. The Terps outscored the Orange 3-0, including two goals by sophomore attack Allison Comito (Glen Head, N.Y.), to increase their halftime lead to 8-2.

The Orange would counter, however, beginning the second half with three consecutive goals to cut the Terrapin lead to 8-5 after Carrie Soults and Katrina Hable each scored off of free-position opportunities. The Terps' first score of the second half came at the 37:41 mark when freshman midfielder Courtney Hobbs (West Lakes, South Australia) would connect off of an Allison Comito assisted ball.

Adams then took control, scoring all five of her goal in the second half, including three consecutive within a five-minute span. She would also assist on two late second-half goals. Syracuse's Hable scored twice more in the second half but the Orange couldn't overcome the deficit.

In goal, Maryland's Alex Kahoe (Villanova, Pa.) posted 10 saves while Syracuse's Clothilde Ewing recorded 11 saves while allowing the 18 goals. Maryland travels to ACC foe Virginia on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. matchup with the Cavaliers. Following Tuesday' game, the Terps embark on a four-game road tour which begins on March 20 at Dartmouth. The Terps return home on April 3 to host James Madison at 4 p.m.
