COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland sophomore attack Allison Comito (Glen Head, N.Y.) scored a career-high seven goals on seven shots to lead the top-ranked Terrapins to a 17-6 defeat against seventh-ranked Georgetown Saturday afternoon in an NCAA quarterfinal game at Ludwig Field.
The four-time defending NCAA champion Terrapins (19-0) advanced to Friday night's national semifinals at Johns Hopkins, where they will meet Penn State. The Nittany Lions advanced by upsetting fourth-seeded Princeton, 9-7.
"Things really clicked for us today," Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal said. "We're pleased about getting back to the final four and excited about playing."
After a first-round bye, Maryland sprinted out to an 8-0 lead. Comito scored four goals during the Terrapins' early onslaught, which showed why they have been the nation's No. 1-ranked team throughout the year. Georgetown didn't score until Kristen Baer took a pass from Sheehan Stanwick and scored with 5:42 left in the first half. Maryland led 11-3 at halftime.
With its 17 goals today, Maryland broke the all-time single-season goals record. The Terrapins have scored 298 goals in 19 games, topping the previous mark of 286 in 21 games in 1998. Georgetown focused most of its efforts on stopping Jen Adams, but that left Comito free to set up in her favorite spot to the right of the goal. She took even greater advantage than she did earlier this season when Maryland defeated the Hoyas 21-9, and she scored six goals on six shots.
"I don't think it's any particular team," Comito said. "I think it's just if I have a good game and I guess I did today."
Adams couldn't eventually be stopped either. Her third, and final, goal of the game, which was two minutes and 19 seconds into the second half, broke the school's single-season goal-scoring record, set by Kelly Amonte in 1996. Adams has 63 goals and, after adding two assists against the Hoyas, she needs five points to break Amonte's single-season points record of 110.
Maryland junior goalkeeper Alex Kahoe (Villanova, Pa.) had another outstanding game, tallying 18 saves in 60 minutes. It marks the second time this season she has posted 18 saves while her season-high is 21 (also her career-high) which she totaled against Princeton on April 28. Georgetown's Bowen Holden totaled 12 saves.
Maryland and Penn State play at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 14.
Virginia and Duke meet in the other semifinal at 8:30 p.m.
