RICHMOND, VA. - Steve Oursler had a career-high four hits, Daryl Whitmer scored a career-high four runs and Sean Lomas had a career-high four RBI, leading Maryland (4-10) to a 12-4 win over Virginia Commonwealth (15-7) in baseball action on Sunday at the Diamond. The Terps pounded out a season-high 20 hits against the Rams.
Matt Swope opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning when he led off with a double and then scored on a single by Brian Patenaude. The Rams, however, tied the game at 1-1 when Barry Blake singled home Matt Davis in the bottom of the third inning.
Whitmer gave the Terps a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning when he reached on a throwing error and later scored on a ground out by Kevin McDonald. Cory Bauswell, however, tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning when he doubled home Brian Mohr.
In the top of the sixth inning, Lomas drilled a two-run single into left field, giving the Terps a 4-2 lead. Maryland then added four more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Craig Munroe scored on a throwing error. McDonald, Lomas and Swope then launched consecutive RBI singles to extend the lead to 8-2.
Oursler extended the lead to 10-2 in the top of the eighth inning with a two-run single. He was followed by Lomas, who singled home another run to make the score 11-2.
In the ninth inning, Chuck Easter singled home Tony Jackson to increase the lead to 12-2. The Rams got a pair of runs in the ninth inning, but relief pitcher Mike Dallmeyer was able to complete the save.
Jamie Hammond (2-3) pitched six innings to get the win while Bo Acors (2-1) took the loss.
The Terps travel to George Washington on Tuesday for a 2:30 p.m.
TERP NOTES: The 20 hits is the most by the Terps in a game since they had 24 against Duke on April 3, 1999 ... Whitmer's four runs are the most by a Maryland player since Brian Patenaude scored four times against Duke on April 3, 1999.
