Maryland Baseball Team Beats Coppin State 21-3

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Daryl Whitmer, Craig Munroe and Jason Mohap each hit a home run, leading Maryland (5-11) to a 21-3, seven-inning win over Coppin State (3-6) in baseball action on Wednesday at Shipley Field. Whitmer hit a two-run blast in the bottom of the first inning while Munroe and Mohap hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning.

The Terps scored two runs in each of the first three innings to take a 6-0 lead. They then exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 11-0 advantage.

Coppin State came back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning but Maryland tacked on seven more runs in bottom of the fifth inning to stretch the lead to 18-3. The Terps closed out the game with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Mohap and Kevin McDonald paced the Terps with three hits each. Dave Wilfert, playing in his first collegiate game, had a pair of hits. Wilfert and Munroe led Maryland with four RBI apiece.

Matt Basinger (1-1) went 5.0 innings to pick up the win while Sheldon McDonald (2-2) took the loss.

The Terps travel to Clemson this weekend to open up their ACC schedule. Game times are 7:15 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
