Terps Head To Chapel Hill

March 23, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Following the cancellation of its game against Vermont scheduled for last Tuesday, March 21 in College Park due to heavy rain, the No. 7 Maryland men's lacrosse team heads to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a huge ACC battle with No. 6 North Carolina, Saturday, at Fetzer Field. Both teams come into the game on hot streaks. Maryland has won four games in a row including a pair over ranked teams last week. While the Tar Heels are off to their best start since 1993 with a 6-1 record. They lost their first game of the season to Duke on Wednesday in Durham, 13-8. North Carolina had opened the campaign 6-0 before suffering its first setback.

"Buggs" Combs Named ACC Player Of The Week
Andrew "Buggs" Combs (Baltimore, Md.) was named ACC Player of the Week on March 20 after a sensational week in which he led the Terps to a 2-0 record, scoring six goals. Combs equaled his career high twice scoring three goals in the win over No. 18 Delaware and three against No. 11 Cornell. Overall, Combs has eight goals and three assists for 11 points.

Combs was also named Maryland's male student-athlete of the week for the week ending March 18.

Edell Moves Into Fourth On All-Time Win List
Maryland head coach Dick Edell passed former Towson mentor Carl Runk for fourth on the all-time collegiate coaching win list with the Terps' 8-7 win over Cornell on Saturday. The win was especially sweet because it came on Edell's 57th birthday. Edell's record currently stands at 263-116 in 28 years at Maryland, Army and the University of Baltimore. Runk's record was 262-161.

Next on the list for Edell is Army's Jack Emmer, the man who replaced Edell as the coach at West Point when Edell came to Maryland in 1984. Emmer is also the only man Edell trails on the active coaching win list. In his 31st year overall and 17th at Army, Emmer has a 275-148 career record. (see chart on page 2)

Edell became the first coach in ACC history to reach the 150-win plateau at a conference school earlier this month with the win over Towson. In 17 years with the Terps, Edell has a record of 152-69 (.688).

Maryland's Last Game
#9 Maryland 8, #11 Cornell 7

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Junior midfielder Chris Malone notched the game-winning goal with 7:09 left in the fourth to break a 7-7 deadlock and give No. 9 Maryland (5-1 overall) a hard-fought 8-7 victory over No. 11 Cornell at Schoellkopf Field on a sunny and brisk Saturday afternoon.

Maryland held off a furious Cornell attack in the final minute. The Terps made three outstanding defensive plays to secure the win, sophomore midfielder Nate Watkins knocked loose a Cornell pass with 35 seconds left when the Big Red had the ball deep in Maryland territory. Then after Cornell regained possession Marcus LaChapelle intercepted a pass by Cornell defenseman Ryan McClay with 21 seconds left and as the final buzzer sounded goalie Pat McGinnis made his 10th and final stop on David Key's shot from about 35 yards.

Maryland rallied back after falling behind 5-2 with 8:05 left in the first half. Maryland scored four straight goals including three from Andrew "Buggs" Combs and one goal by Brian Zeller to take a 6-5 lead with 8:43 left in the third quarter. Cornell tied the game at 6-6 on a Chris Packard goal with 6:20 in the third. Maryland's Alex Poole gave the Terps a 7-6 lead to end the third quarter when he scored with 4:19 left in the period. The Big Red tied the game at 7-7 on J.P. Schalk's goal with 11:02 left in regulation, and that set the stage for Malone's winner which he knocked in from the left side of the goal.

LaChapelle led Maryland with four points on two goals -- the Terps' first two of the game -- and two assists. Combs' three goals equaled his career-high for the second straight game. Mike Mollot recorded one assist to raise his team-high point total to 20 and keep his consecutive point scoring streak alive at six.

Maryland's extra-man unit was once against outstanding, scoring on all three attempts for the second straight game. Maryland has scored on six consecutive man-up opportunities.

The Terps, who outshot Cornell 36-27, have won eight games in a row against Cornell.

With the win, Maryland head coach Dick Edell passed former Towson coach Carl Runk for fourth on the all-time collegiate coaching win list. Edell's overall record stands at 263-116 in 28 years at Maryland, Army and the University of Baltimore.

The Last Maryland-UNC Game

LaChapelle scored a career-high three goals and tied his career best with five points, while Hochstadt netted his third hat trick in four games and moved into a tie for 18th on the all-time point-scoring list in Maryland history with 134 points.

The Terrapins (6-1, 1-1 ACC) held a narrow lead over Tar Heels (5-3, 0-1 ACC) for much of the afternoon.
