Men's Lacrosse Maryland Athletics

Post-Game Notes -- Maryland 7, Duke 6

April 21, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland defeated Duke 7-5 by scoring three fourth-quarter goals Friday night in semifinal action of the ACC Lacrosse Tournament at Byrd Stadium. The Terrapins advance to Sunday's tournament final against Virginia. Face-off on Sunday is 3:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on HTS.

Following are postgame notes from the Maryland victory over Duke:

o Played immediately following the highest-scoring game in ACC Tournament history, the Maryland-Duke matchup was the second-lowest scoring game in tourney annals. Maryland's 7-6 victory matched the same score in the very first game in tournament history, ironically, in which Duke downed Maryland in 1989. Coincidentally, the record for the lowest-scoring game was the other semifinal of 1989 as North Carolina defeated Virginia 7-5.

o Friday's ACC Tournament semifinal games marked the first instance in which both ACC semifinals were decided by a single goal.

o Duke's six goals were the team's lowest since a 12-6 loss to the Terps in its 1996 season opener.

o Maryland's seven goals were the fewest by a winning team in the ACC Tournament since both semifinals in the inaugural tournament (7-6, 7-5).

o Maryland advances to the ACC championship for the first time since 1998 and just the second time since back-to-back-to-back appearances in 1991, '92 and '93.

o The Terps have hosted the ACC Tournament on two previous occasions, and in both instances (1992 and 1993), the Terps also advanced to the final.

o The Terps won their fifth game this season by a single goal, the most in any of Maryland's 75-year lacrosse history.

o Brian Zeller led Maryland with two goals and two assists against the Blue Devils, raising his team-leading career totals to 64 goals and 34 assists. He is two points shy of reaching 100 in his career, and 31 points away from cracking the Terps' top 20 in career scoring.
