Georgia Tech Beats Maryland Baseball Team 10-3

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Junior left fielder Jason Basil drilled a three-run home run, leading Georgia Tech (26-8, 9-2 ACC) over Maryland (10-22, 0-9 ACC) 10-3 in ACC baseball action on Saturday at Shipley Field. The game was the finale of a three-game weekend series between the schools.

Georgia Tech took advantage of two Terp errors in the top of the first inning to go up 4-0. Sophomore second baseman Richard Lewis extended his career-high hitting streak to 24 games by leading off with a single. He later scored the first run of the inning on a single by sophomore third baseman Mark Teixeira.

Basil keyed another four-run Yellow Jacket outburst in the top of the fifth inning when he launched his three-run home run to center field, increasing the lead to 8-0.

The Terps got three runs back in the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior left fielder Brian Patenaude scored on a wild pitch to make the score 8-1. Junior third baseman Steve Oursler and sophomore catcher Kevin McDonald followed with RBI singles.

The Yellow Jackets extended the lead to 10-2 in the top of the seventh inning on RBI singles by junior designated hitter Derik Goffena and freshman first baseman Tyler Parker.

Sophomore righthander Steve Kelly (4-2) got the win while senior lefthander Joe Hart (2-6) took the loss.

Patenaude, who went 2-for-4, extended his career-high hitting streak to 15 games. McDonald and senior first baseman Craig Munroe also had two-hit games for the Terps.

Maryland is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Howard in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Georgia Tech travels to Mercer on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
