COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- University of Maryland men's lacrosse coach Dick
Edell announced the signing of three more high school seniors to national letters of intent to begin play with the nationally-ranked team
for the 2001 season. Justin Duffie (Gaithersburg, Md./Landon), Ian Healy
(Great Falls, Va./Landon) and Alex Melzer (Darien, Conn./Darien) have
signed on to play for the Terps.
The trio joins the fall signing class of J.R. Bordley (Vienna,
Va./Landon School), Paul Gillette (Millersville, Md./Severna Park), Dan
LaMonica (Lutherville, Md./Boys' Latin), Chris Passavia (Stony Brook,
N.Y./Ward Melville), Jeremy Pastula (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown), Dave
Wagner (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Lee Zink (Rowayton,
Conn./Darien).
Justin Duffie is a 6-2, 200-pound defenseman from the Landon School,
winners of the IAC (Interscholastic Athletic Conference) Championship
this spring. Duffie has been a star on the football and lacrosse fields
during his time at Landon.
Fellow Landon teammate Ian Healy joins the Terps after a strong season
as a midfielder for the title-winning Bears. The 5-7, 165-pounder
starred in soccer in the fall and lacrosse during the spring.
Alex Melzer comes to Maryland from Connecticut. The 6-1, 185-pound
midfielder missed most of the past season with a knee injury. He played
football, hockey and lacrosse at Darien.
