COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Eric D'Alessandro (Middletown, N.J.) pitched five innings, allowing just one run on four hits as the Maryland baseball team defeated Coppin State, 16-1, Wednesday afternoon at Shipley Field. D'Alessandro (1-1) fanned a career-high eight batters to earn his first collegiate victory.
The Terps scored in just four innings and pounded out 12 hits in the lopsided win. Maryland scored first with four runs in the first inning off Coppin State starter Kevin Solano. After a walk to Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.), Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.) hit his first homerun of the season, a two-run shot to right, to give Maryland a 2-0 lead. It was the fourth-straight game that the Terps have hit a homer. The Terrapins added two more runs to lead 4-0 after one inning of play.
Coppin State scored its only run of the contest in the second on a RBI single by catcher Eddie Wilson.
Maryland crossed home plate five more times in the third. The Terps used five hits in the inning along with two Coppin State errors for the five-run outburst.
The Terps scored seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to close out the scoring.
Oursler had a big day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBI. The Maryland native had a single, double and homer, just missing the cycle. Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.) also had a good day, hitting 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored and two RBI. Jeremy Suarez (Lakewood, N.J.) had his first multiple-hit game as a Terrapin by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
With the victory, Maryland improves to 5-9 while Coppin State falls to 0-9. The Terrapins continue their four-game homestand Friday (Mar. 16), when nationally-ranked Clemson comes to Shipley Field. The action is set to begin at 3 p.m.
