Box Score
ATLANTA, Ga.- Georgia Tech scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap a wild come-from-behind 11-9 victory over Maryland Sunday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta. Both schools combined for 20 runs, 23 hits and seven errors on the day.
Third baseman Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.) knocked in his second run of the series to give Maryland a 1-0 lead in the first. With Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) on first base after hitting a single, Oursler just missed hitting a homerun, as he doubled off the top of the fence to drive in Buffone and put the Terps on the board first.
As they have all series, Georgia Tech would respond right back with two runs in the bottom of the first. After Victor Menocal singled and Richard Lewis was hit by a pitch, Bryan Prince doubled down the left field line, scoring two, to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 lead. After a wild pitch from Maryland starter Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) that advanced Prince to third, first baseman Jason Perry drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left, making it 3-1 Georgia Tech.
The Terrapins took the lead with one swing in the second when right fielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) drilled a three-run homerun over the left field fence to give Maryland a 4-3 lead. Shortstop Sean Lomas (Brewster, N.Y.) and center fielder Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) were both on base when Swope hit his third long ball of the season.
In the bottom half of the second, second baseman Matthew Boggs hit a sacrifice fly, scoring designated hitter Matt Murton, to tie the score at four. The Yellow Jackets would then regain the lead when Menocal reached base on a fielding error by Terrapin second baseman John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) and scored center fielder Wes Rynders, making the score 5-4 Tech.
The seesaw affair continued in the top of the third inning, as Oursler did not miss hitting a homerun this time, launching a solo-homer to left-center, tying the contest at five.
The trend of each team scoring in every inning continued in the bottom of the third when Georgia Tech left fielder Brad Stockton hit a single to left-center, scoring Perry, to give the Yellow Jackets a 6-5 lead.
The Terrapins would answer back again, this time with two runs, to regain the lead 7-6. The Terps' first run of the inning would come courtesy of a Anthony Buffone sacrifice fly to center, scoring designated hitter Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.). A wild pitch by Georgia Tech starter Kevin Cameron gave Maryland its seventh run of the game as Whitmer would scampered home, making it 7-6 Maryland.
In the Georgia Tech fourth, the wild affair continued as Tech scored one, tying the game at seven. Richard Lewis singled to left, scoring Boggs, to deadlock the game once again.
The Terrapins continued their string of scoring in every inning in the fifth when Sean Lomas blasted his second homer of the season down the left field line, putting Maryland back on top, 8-7.
The Yellow Jackets regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with three runs off Maryland reliever Mark Martin (Manassas, Va.). Three RBI singles, from Bryan Prince, Jason Basil and Brad Stockton gave Tech a 10-8 advantage.
Maryland would close the gap to one in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Lomas, scoring Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.), making it 10-9 Georgia Tech.
Georgia Tech added insurance run in the bottom half of the inning to close out the scoring.
Mark Martin is tabbed with the loss and is 2-3 on the year while Brian Burks of Georgia Tech improved to 2-0. Jeff Watchko pitched two scoreless innings to earn his fourth save of the year.
The Terps are now 5-15 and 0-6 in the ACC while the Yellow Jackets move to 20-6 and 4-2 in the conference. Maryland is back in action Tuesday (Mar. 27) at regional foe Towson. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
