BALTIMORE, Md. -
Head coach Gina LaMandre couldn't have asked for a better birthday present. An All-America hurler and NCAA champion at Trenton State University, the mentor witnessed the latest solid outings by three members of the Terps' third-rated ACC pitching staff as Maryland (23-13) proved too much for Morgan State, 10-1 and 8-0. Impact freshmen Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) and Liz Gall (Bothell, Wash.) struck out five apiece in a 10-1 Game 1 victory while junior southpaw Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) allowed only five hits in Game 2's shutout.
In addition, the Terp offense combined for 21 base knocks in the 12 innings, with long balls by Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.), Cyphert and Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) among the highlights.
The Terps used the blast by Radford, a three-run shot in the third, to break the first contest open. Maryland took a 4-1 lead on the junior catcher's fifth bomb of the year. Back-to-back "jacks" by Cyphert and Burrell in the seventh gave the Terps a nine-run lead, tying for its most lopsided victory of the season with March 2's 9-0 win over Towson.
Cyphert's monster drive was her first as a collegian. She finished the day 2-5 with three runs scored and a double to add to Game 1's pitching victory. Gall allowed only one hit in the contest's final four innings.
Game 2 featured more Terp offense. Maryland crossed its first run on a Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) RBI-single in the opening stanza and took a commanding 7-0 lead after batting around in the second. Freshman Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) crossed on a wild pitch in the fifth to put the Terps up 8-0, and the game was called three outs later.
Carpenter was tough in improving to 5-1 with her first shutout of the season. The Terps are now winners in eight of their last ten games.
Two Terrapin seniors had tremendous days at the plate. Potzman put in a 5-for-6 (.833) effort with four runs batted in and two scored, while Burrell went 5-for-7 (.714) with two driven in and four crossed, a double and a stolen base.
The Terps celebrated LaMandre's birthday less than a week after the mentor guided Maryland softball to its 200th career victory. The Terps are now 7-5 all-time on the day of their head coach's birth.
