Georgetown Rallies In The Ninth Inning To Defeat Maryland, 8-7

March 7, 2001

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland starting pitcher Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) fanned a career-high 10 batters but it was not enough as the Terps lost 8-7 to Georgetown, Wednesday afternoon at Shipley Field in the 2001 home opener. The Terrapins led 7-0 after eight innings but the Hoyas exploded for eight runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull out the comeback win.

The Terps got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first. Third baseman Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.) doubled down the rightfield line and second baseman John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) followed with a RBI double, scoring Oursler, to give the Terps a 1-0 lead. Catcher Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) added a run-scoring single to center to bring home McCurdy and increase the lead to 2-0.

Maryland scored in the game's first four innings with single runs in the second, third and fourth to pad its lead to 5-0 after four inning of play.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Terps struck again with another pair of runs. Leftfielder Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.) led off the inning with a single to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) then hit an infield safety to second base, putting runners on the corners with no outs. John McCurdy came up next and smacked a double down the leftfield line, scoring Patenaude, to improve the Terps' lead to 6-0. The RBI-double was the second of the game for McCurdy as he finished the afternoon 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Sean Lomas (Brewster, N.Y.) finished the Maryland scoring, to give the Terps a 7-0 advantage.

After eight scoreless innings of pitching from Schmoll and Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.), the Georgetown bats got hot in the top of the ninth.

The Hoyas came alive in the ninth, scoring eight runs on three hits and three Maryland errors to take their first lead of the day, 8-7. The big blow in the inning came when Georgetown's Robert O'Hare reached on a throwing error by Buffone with two outs to score the final two runs of the contest.

Georgetown's Matt Arizin (1-2) pitched the final two innings of the game to record his first win of the season.

The loss spoiled an outstanding pitching performance from Maryland's Schmoll. The Maryland native was dominant, fanning a career-high 10 and limiting Georgetown to two hits in seven scoreless innings of work. In his last 14.1 innings, Schmoll has struckout 19 batters.

The Hoyas picked up their first win of the season and improve to 1-7 on the season while the loss snaps Maryland's three-game winning streak, dropping the Terps to 4-5.

Mike Dallmeyer (Enola, Pa.) suffered the loss for the Terps and is 0-3. Maryland returns to action Friday, March 9, when the Terps travel to Virginia Commonwealth. The action is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
