COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland senior third baseman Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.) set career-highs with five hits and five RBIs in leading the Terrapins to an 11-8 comeback victory over George Washington Wednesday evening at Shipley Field. Oursler went a perfect 5-for-5 on the night including three doubles and a triple. The three two-baggers give Oursler 19 for the season, which ties him for third on the single-season doubles chart at Maryland.
The Colonials got going first with a run in the second. Tony Brown delivered a RBI double to score Mike Bassett to give GW a 1-0 lead.
The Terps came right back with two runs in the home half of the second to take a 2-1 advantage. Freshman catcher Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) stroked a RBI double and sophomore leftfielder Edwin Thompson hit a RBI single to give the Terps' their first lead of the night. Thompson tied a career-high with three hits for Maryland.
Both teams scored one run in the third before each school scored three runs apiece in the fifth. GW got its three runs on four fifth inning hits, including a RBI double from Jake Wald and a run-scoring infield single by Matt Krimmel. The three-run frame gave George Washington a 5-3 lead before the Maryland bats got going.
Junior rightfielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) got things started for the Terps in the fifth with his seventh home run of the season to leadoff the inning. After a John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) single, Oursler hit one of his three doubles to drive in McCurdy to tie the contest at five. As a team, Maryland hit a season-high 10 doubles, breaking the old mark of seven hit against North Carolina A&T in the season opener. Junior Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) added a RBI with a sacrifice fly to center to score Oursler and give Maryland a 6-5 lead.
GW responded with two runs in the sixth to go back on top, 7-6. Bassett drove in his only run of the game with a RBI double and catcher Ross Smirne slapped a RBI single to center to account for the two GW runs.
The Terps kept the runs coming with two of their own in the bottom half of the sixth to take the lead for good at 8-7. Two more RBI doubles, from Swope and Oursler, drove in the pair of runs in the frame.
Sophomore pitcher Mike Dallmeyer (Enola, Pa.) made the lead stand with 3.1 innings of terrific relief. Dallmeyer (1-5) recorded his first win of the season by fanning two in his third-straight strong performance out of the Terrapin bullpen.
Maryland put the game away in the eighth with three runs. Two critical errors by GW and a two-run single from Oursler gave the Terps an 11-7 advantage. GW scored once in the ninth, but it was not enough, as the Terrapins held on for the 11-8 victory.
The win sends Maryland to 16-34 overall while George Washington falls to 34-20. The Terps close out the 2001 home schedule against Richmond tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
