UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Elise Ryder (Dayton, Ohio) scored 14
points and went 4-4 from three-point range to lead Richmond to a 74-52
victory over Maryland this afternoon at the Robins Center. Richmond
improves to 5-1 on the season, their best start since the 1990, while the
Terrapins fall to 3-3.
Richmond senior Ebony Tanner (Garner, N.C.) led all scorers with 20 points
and pulled down five rebounds. Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) contributed
14 points, eight rebounds and six assists while teammate Cammy Desmond
(Midlothian, Va.) came off the bench to chip in 14 points and dish out a
career-high six assists.
Maryland took its only lead of the game in the opening minute off two free
throws by Renneika Razor and the score see-sawed during the following five
minutes. The Spiders went on their first of two 15-2 runs in the first half
to take a thirteen-point advantage with just over ten minutes remaining.
Included in this run were three shots from beyond the arc, from Ryder,
Desmond and Amber Goppert (Malone, N.Y.) in a two-minute span. The
Terrapins responded, scoring eight points in two minutes to cut the lead to
five (21-16), the closest that the visitors would come. Richmond answered
with their second scoring run and took a 20-point halftime lead.
In second half action, Richmond continued their offensive domination,
shooting .492 percent from the field. The Spiders out-rebounded the
Terrapins 37-32 and caused Maryland to commit 25 turnovers
Maryland was led by Renneika Razor's 12 points and seven rebounds.
