Box Score
CHARLESTON, S.C.- Senior rightfielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) tied a career-high by going 4-for-5 with two runs scored to lead Maryland past The Citadel 8-6 in game number six of the Charleston Crab House Shootout presented by Trademark Properties in Riley Park.
The Terps (1-1) got the scoring started in the top of the first inning as Swope and junior shortstop John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) both singled and then scored on a single by senior catcher Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.).
The Citadel (1-1) answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first when first baseman Jason Randall scored on a RBI single by third baseman Chip Cannon.
The Terrapins added to their lead in the top of the third when Swope scored on a wild pitch by Bulldog starter T.A. Fulmer.
The Bulldogs responded in the bottom half of the frame and scored four runs on five hits. The inning featured RBI singles by Cannon, rightfielder Brook Dantzler and shortstop Jon Aughey. Designated hitter Michael Mainor added a RBI double to account for all four Bulldog runs. The game remained a pitcher's duel until the top of the seventh inning.
The Terrapins then scored five runs in the seventh and capitalized on four Bulldog errors. McDonald and freshman second baseman Joe Sargent (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) had RBI singles in the inning to give the Terps the lead for good.
The Citadel rallied in the ninth and scored a run when Jason Randall walked and scored when Mainor was hit by the pitch. The Bulldogs loaded the bases but were unable to capitalize as Maryland closer Ken Beck (Laurel, Md.) shut the door and picked up his first save of the season. The save was just Beck's second career save as a Terrapin.
Junior reliever Brad Lyons (Massapequa, N.Y.) earned his first victory of the season by pitching 4.1 innings of terrific relief. Lyons (1-0) allowed just one run on two hits and struck out three to earn the win for the Terrapins.
The Terps close out their stint at the Charleston Crab House Shootout Sunday vs. James Madison. The two teams will hit the field beginning at 10 a.m.
