Maryland Baseball Rolls Past William & Mary, 14-3

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.- Senior right fielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) went 3-for-6 with two RBIs to lead Maryland to a convincing 14-3 victory over William & Mary Tuesday night at Plumeri Park in Williamsburg, Va. The three hits moved Swope into the record books as Maryland's all-time career leader with 215, passing Scott Patterson (1985-88) who had 214 career hits.

The night was also a special one for Maryland coach Terry Rupp, who notched his 250th victory of his coaching career.

In the top of the third inning, Maryland scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead. After junior center fielder Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) led off the inning by reaching on a two-base error, he later scored on a groundout by sophomore third baseman Anthony Buffone (Manalapan. N.J.) to give the Terps the 1-0 advantage.

The Terps extended their lead to 6-0 in the fourth after scoring five two-out runs. Matt Swope had one of the five Terps' hits in the frame with a two-run single while Anthony Buffone also contributed a two-run double in the inning and junior second baseman Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.) had a RBI-single in the five-run fourth.

In the fifth, junior shortstop John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) blasted his team-leading 13th home run of the season to deep left center field. Freshman left fielder Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.) also contributed a RBI-single and Kyle George had a RBI-double in the fifth to extend the Terrapin lead to 9-0.

The Tribe finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth with three runs, including two unearned runs off Maryland starter Todd Ainsworth (Hershey, Pa.).

Ainsworth (5-2) pitched well for the Terps, as he lasted five innings and allowed just one earned run with three strikeouts to earn his fifth win of the season.

In the Maryland sixth, the Terps added another four runs to extend their lead to 10 runs. John McCurdy drove in his second run of the game with a triple to right center to extend the Terrapin lead to 10-3. The RBI was McCurdy's 53rd of the season which places him in a tie for ninth all-time on the single-season list.

Later in the inning, junior first baseman Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) also got into the act with a RBI-single for Maryland's 11th run of the contest. Still in the sixth, Kyle George drove in his third and fourth runs of the game with a double to left center to extend the lead to 13-3.

In the ninth, John McCurdy drove in his third run of the game with a RBI-groundout to close out the scoring at 14-3.

With the victory, the Terps improved to 18-9 overall while William & Mary fell to 15-16. The Terrapins are back in action Wednesday vs. Temple. First pitch is at 5 p.m. at Shipley Field.
