COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Duke baseball team erupted for 19 runs on 18 hits and took advantage of five Maryland errors as the Blue Devils topped the Terps, 19-8, Saturday evening at Shipley Field in front of a season-high crowd of 818. The Blue Devils scored in every inning except the first and the fifth en route to their second ACC victory of the season.

Duke reliever Justin Dilucchio tossed 4.2 innings of relief to improve his record to 5-3 on the season while Maryland starter Todd Ainsworth (Hershey, Pa.) suffered the loss for the Terps. Ainsworth (5-5) pitched 4.0 innings and gave up five runs, two of which were earned, with three strikeouts and two walks.

Duke scored one run in the second and three in the third to take an early 4-0 lead. Catcher Troy Caradonna got the scoring started with a RBI-double in the second and the Blue Devils took advantage of a Maryland error in the third to score three runs, two earned, to build the early lead.

The Terps cut the lead to 4-2 in the home half of the third on a bases loaded walk to freshman left fielder Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.) and a RBI-groundout by freshman first baseman Jason Maxey (Columbia, Md.).

Duke added a run in the fourth before the floodgates opened in the sixth as the Blue Devils crossed home plate seven times. Duke pounded out eight hits in the frame and took advantage of two Terrapin errors to explode for the seven runs.

Duke would score seven more times over the next three innings while the Terrapins scored two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, and three in the eighth to end the high-scoring affair at 19-8.

Two Duke batters finished with three hits including third baseman Grant Stanley and Caradonna. Designated hitter Tim Layden drove in a team-high four runs for Duke while first baseman Larry Broadway and shortstop Kevin Kelly each knocked in three runs for the winners.

Junior shortstop John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) led the Terrapins offensively by finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored and senior catcher Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) ended the game 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs for Maryland.

With the win, Duke improved to 20-24 overall and 2-12 in the ACC while the Terrapins fell to 27-18 and 3-14 in the conference. The two teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
