Terps Continue ACC Play at NC State This Sunday
* Maryland (7-5-1 overall, 1-3 ACC) continues its three-game road swing as the Terps travel to ACC foe NC State (7-6-1, 0-4 ACC) this Sunday at 1 p.m. The Terps come off a 1-0 loss to No. 6 Virginia in a game that was played in a torrential driving rainstorm last Tuesday night at Klockner Stadium. The Terps are ranked No. 19 in the most recent Soccer America poll and are in receiving votes in the NSCAA Coaches' poll and the Soccer Times poll.
* Prior to the loss at Virginia, Maryland won its 35th all-time game against an NSCAA Top 25 team, with its 2-1 win over Clemson on Friday, Oct. 10 at Ludwig Field on Alumni Night. The win kept the Terps a perfect 6-0 at home vs. Clemson, dating to the start of the series in 1994. Sophomore Ali Andrzejewski (Lutherville, Md.) got the Terps on the board in the 11th minute. Then, sophomore Mallory Mahar (Medina, Ohio) headed home the second goal off a throw-in from Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.). For Mahar, the goal was her third off a header this season and gives her seven of her eight career goals on headers. Also, the goal was her third this season in four starts since she reentered the lineup at Florida State, after seeing limited time as she recovered from a torn ACL suffered in April. For Givens, the assist was the 17th of her career -- tying her with teammate Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) for fifth all-time -- and 12th career helper on a throw-in. In goal, Kristen Barnhill (Charlottesville, Va.) made five saves for her sixth win of the year.
* NC State has lost five of its last seven games, falling this past Wednesday night to Duke, 3-1 at SAS Stadium in Cary, N.C. The Wolfpack started the year 5-1-1 before suffering tough times recently. They have been outscored 17-2 in ACC games this season. NC State is led by junior Erin Griswold, who has a team-high 21 points on eight goals and five assists. Lindsey Underwood has six goals and seven assists for 19 points. In goal, freshman Megan Connors has earned the starting job for the last 10 games and has a 1.99 GAA.

The Series With NC State
* The Maryland-NC State series dates back to the start of the Terps' varsity program in 1987. In fact, NC State, along with Virginia, North Carolina and George Washington are the only teams to have played Maryland at least once in each varsity season for the past 16 years.
* All-time the Wolfpack holds a 10-4-4 lead in the series, but many of those wins came prior to 1995 when Maryland had a fledgling program.
* Over the last six meetings, the Terps hold a 3-2-2 lead. The road team has won the last three games in the series. Maryland is undefeated in its last three road games vs. NC State in winning 2-0 in 2001, tying 0-0 in 1999 and winning 6-2 in 1997.
* Last season, NC State handed the Terps a heart-breaking loss in overtime as Jordan Allison headed home a corner kick in the 103rd minute for the win. Maryland's goal came from Simone Dekker, who converted a pretty pass from Katie Ludwig to tie the game at 1-1 in the 22nd minute.
* In the last game in Raleigh, the Terps posted a 2-0 victory at Method Road on Oct. 28, 2001. Jenny Boyd headed home Lindsay Givens' throw-in in the 20th minute to put the Terps on top 1-0. Boyd then started the Terps' second goal as her corner kick lead to the next goal. Kim King collected a rebound of a Valerie Lawrence shot off the corner kick and scored into the lower left corner with 50 seconds left in regulation.
Scoring Early and Often
* Maryland has had a knack for the early goal over its recent 5-3-1 streak. The Terps have scored the game's opening goal -- all within the first 16 minutes of action -- in seven of the last nine games. In five of those instances, the goal came in the first five minutes of action: Ali Andrzejewski scored 2:54 into the 3-2 win over Towson, Katie Ludwig scored 1:14 into the 1-0 win over Loyola, Simone Dekker scored 2:13 into the 3-1 victory over No. 23 Tennessee, at Florida State, Mallory Mahar headed in a throw-in from Lindsay Givens just 4:38 into the match, and Mahar turned the trick again as she headed in the first goal off a Kimmy Francis' corner kick just 3:39 into the win over James Madison. Andrzejewski scored 10:15 into the 2-1 win over Clemson. Overall, the Terps have scored the first goal in the game eight times this season and are 6-1-1 in those games.
Ludwig Moves Up All-Time Scoring, Goals Charts
* With her five-point game vs. James Madison, senior Katie Ludwig is now tied for eighth on Maryland's all-time scoring chart with 44 points. With the two goals in the win over the Dukes, she is also tied for ninth all-time in career goals with 17.
* Ludwig is tied with Audra Weber (1991-94), who also had 44 career points. She is 10 points away from Kelly Amonte, brother of long-time NHL star Tony Amonte, who had 54 points in her four-year career from 1992-95.
* On the goals list, Ludwig is tied with WUSA star Emily Janss of the New York Power, who also had 17 from 1996-99. Ludwig can tie Weber on the goals list with one more tally and can tie Amonte for seventh with three more goals.
* Jenny Biscoe is close to cracking the all-time scoring list as she has 37 points, five off Janss, who had 42.

* Two Terps have moved up the Maryland career assist chart this season. Jenny Biscoe and Lindsay Givens are now tied for fifth in assists with 17. Biscoe picked up her 17th career helper assisting Katie Ludwig's late goal in the win over James Madison. Next up on the list is Michelle Salmon (1994-97), who had 19.
* Givens got her last helper in the Clemson win -- her third of the season -- all on throw-ins this season. Her last two throws set up Mallory Mahar goals.
* Kimmy Francis now has 12 career assists and is tied for 10th on the list in just her second year with the Terps. She has four assists in her last six games.
* Givens has 11 of her 16 career assists on throw-ins. Biscoe led the squad in assists last season with nine including a school-record tying three at Rutgers on Sept. 6, 2002. Dana Jarzyniecki set the record originally vs. Howard on Oct. 11, 2000.

* During each of Higgins-Cirovski's seasons at Maryland, she has led the Terps to at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team, leading Maryland to a 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina last season, on Nov. 1, 2002.
