ITA Releases Main Draws For Eastern Regional Championships

Blacksburg, Va, - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has released singles and doubles brackets for the main draw for this weekend's Eastern Women's Regional Championships. Hosted by Virginia Tech, tennis action will begin Friday Oct. 24, at the Hokie's home facility, the Burrows-Burleston Tennis Center.

The tournament begins Friday at 8 a.m., with 32 singles matches to be followed by 32 doubles matches tentatively scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Indoor courts will be used for the main draw while the outdoor courts will be used, weather permitting, for the consolation singles.

Senior Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) is seeded seventh overall in the main singles draw which consists of 96 players. Marker has received a first round bye and will not play singles until her second round match, Saturday, at 11:30 a.m.

Like Marker, Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania) has received a first round bye as well. The sophomore is seeded No. 11 in the singles draw. She will not play until Saturday at 10 a.m.

Fellow sophomore Jennifer Dent will play first for the Terps on Friday. She will face off against Quinnipiac's Gabby Pasternak at 8:30 a.m.

Rounding out the singles action for the Terps is freshman Marianne Baker (Glenelg, Md.). Baker will take on Ashley Martin from Yale, Friday, at 12:30 p.m.

Every Terp will take to the courts on Friday to participate in doubles action. Marker and Baker are the No. 5 seed in the doubles bracket, and will face off against George Maspn's Dektas and Delorie, Friday, at 3:30.

But and freshman Brooke Rogers (Reisterstown, Md.) will take on Marshall's Hock and Skalsky, Friday, at 4 p.m.

Senior Chloe Chavardes and sophomore Andreea Fusea will both make their first appearance at the Regional Indoor Championships. The duo will look to defeat ACC rival Virginia's tandem of Bechliwanis and Bechliwanis, Friday, at 6 p.m.

Dent will return to the courts for the second time on Friday for doubles action with partner Masha Senic (Glenmont, N.Y.). The pair is matched up with Virginia's James and Stough, Friday, at 7:30 p.m.

The 2003 ITA Regional Championships, the nation's premier collegiate tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season.
