Blacksburg, Va. -
The singles draw was thinned once again, as quarterfinal matches took place Monday morning. Four players now remain in the singles draw after five days of play at the Eastern Regional. Maryland's Emily Marker and Ramona But sit amongst the remaining players still in competition. Should both Terps win Tuesday, they will face off against each other in the finals.
Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) met Virginia's Lauren Bruch in the qarterfinals. Bruch was seeded in the top 30, while Marker headed into the match as the No. 7 seed. Emotions ran high as the winner would be one step closer to securing a spot at the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship. The first set was a long battle which went back and forth between the women. Marker won the first set, 7-6 (9). Bruch answered, taking the second set, 7-5. Maryland's senior responded by putting the Cavalier away early in the third. She clinched the third set, 6-2, for the win, advancing to the semifinals. Marker will face Penn's Nikki Ptak, Tuesday, at 10 a.m.
Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania) recorded a stellar win over No. 3 seed Megan Muth in the quarterfinals. But won her fourth straight defeating William & Mary's Muth, 6-3, 7-5. The Terp sophomore will play Old Dominion's No. 2 seed Nataly Chana, Wednesday, at 10 a.m.
