Oct. 8, 2003

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, held at the Riviera Tennis Club, is the first of three national championship tournaments for the 2003-2004 fall season. Senior Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.), who has earned a preseason ranking of 71, traveled to Pacific Palisades, Calif. to partake in the prestigious tournament. The matches, which feature the top players in Division I tennis, began on Saturday, October 4, and will last until Sunday, October 12.

The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships date back to 1983. Action at the famous Riviera Tennis Club, which has hosted this event since 1988, promises to be exciting, as this is the first singles and doubles championships of the 2003-2004 season.

On Tuesday, October 7, Marker suffered her first singles' loss of the fall season. Marker, a pre-qualifier, was matched up against Erika Valdes. Tulane's Valdes defeated Marker, 6-3 , 6-3.

Although new to the singles backdraw this season, Marker returned to her winning ways on Wednesday. She defeated Lina Suuvarik of Illinois State, 6-4, 6-3.

Next up for Marker is Mihaela Modovan (Florida State) in the backdraw's round of 16.
