College Park, Md. -
The Maryland Terrapins' (11-20, 0-10 ACC) conference woes continued today, dropping both games of a doubleheader to the visiting North Carolina Tar Heels (25-11, 6-5 ACC).
After a week's worth of strong pitching, the Terps were roughed up in the 9-2 and 15-2 losses, with eight pitchers allowing 31 hits.
Sophomore Sean Kane (1-5) got off to a good start in the first game, allowing just three hits through the first four innings, but was hit hard in the fifth and chased out of the game in the sixth. In the second game, sophomore Chris Clem (2-5) couldn't get started, allowing seven hits through the first three, including two home runs to first baseman Jeremy Cleveland.
The Terp bats were kept silent by the solid pitching of Daniel Moore (5-0) and Adam Kalkhof (6-1). Both pitchers were aided by fantastic all-around defense by the Tar Heel fielders, who made several diving catches on the day to snag would-be Terrapin hits.
Junior Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) had a solid day for Maryland, going a combined 5-for-8 with his eighth double of the season and 37th of his career, putting him in sole possession of eighth place on Maryland's all-time list.
Senior Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) hit his fourth home run of the season in the first game, a drive to right center field that was his third career home run off of Moore after taking him deep twice in 2001.
Also going deep for the Terps was sophomore Joe Sargent (Chespeake Beach, Md.), who hit his third home run of the year in the eighth inning of the first game. His .580 slugging percentage is tops on the team, and nine of his 13 hits have gone for extra bases.
The Tar Heels received a scare in the sixth inning of the first game, when Ryan Blake was hit in the face by a Sean Kane fastball. Blake suffered a concussion and was taken to the hospital, but returned for the second game, his pants bloodied and holding on ice pack on his bottom lip.
Easing Blake's pain was the performances of his teammates, most notably Cleveland, who went 5-for-9 with five runs batted in on the day; and Sammy Hewitt, who was 5-for-10 with two home runs and seven runs batted in.
Maryland will try to salvage the season tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. when senior Steve Schmoll (Rockville, MD.) takes the hill as he chases ACC and Maryland records. University president C.D. Mote Jr. will be on hand to throw out the first pitch.
