Box Score

Williamsburg, Va. - The scoreboard at William & Mary's Plumeri Park may have said the Maryland Terrapins (8-17, 0-8 ACC) collected only six hits, but make no mistake about it: The Terp bats came alive in a big way on Wednesday night.

Sophomore Justin Maxwell (Olney, Md.) and the Terp offense handed the Tribe a 10-3 home defeat by driving seven of their 16 hits for extra bases, which only appeared as six hits due to a burnt out bulb on the scoreboard.

Hitting cleanup for the first time after making 12 starts from the eighth spot, Maxwell went 3-for-5 and hit his team-leading fourth and fifth home runs of the year, the first multi-homer game of his career after hitting just three all of last season.

He greeted two Tribe (17-13, 1-1 CAA) relief pitchers with mammoth drives on the respective first pitches of their appearances, first with a solo shot off freshman Joe Roenker that sailed ten feet over the left field foul pole, and a three-run bomb to deep center off of senior Mark Harris.

Freshman Mike Costantino (Somerset) and sophomore Joe Sargent (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) had two doubles each for the Terps, who got to Colonial Athletic Association's second-best pitching staff early by scoring four runs in the first two innings.

Nine of 11 Terp hitters collected a hit, and five had two or more as the Terps scored ten runs for the third time this season.

Tribe freshman starter Phil Bartleski (2-2) took the loss, giving up ten hits and four runs in four innings.

Making his first start since March 18, senior Jared Stuart (2-1) gave the Terps eight strong innings, scattering seven hits and giving up three runs, two of which came on Michael Brown's 11th home run of the season in the sixth.

Terp pitching has been strong against tough offenses the past two games. With senior Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) firing a complete game shutout against a potent West Virginia offense yesterday, Stuart kept William & Mary and their league-leading .312 batting average in check.

NOTES: The road win was the Terps second in nine away games...The Terps have won two straight after losing ten of 11.
