Maryland Slams Four Home Runs In Season Finale

May 14, 2003

Box Score

College Park, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (20-32, 6-17 ACC) ended the regular season with a bang, slamming a season-high four home runs in an 11-5 win over the William & Mary Tribe (30-18, 12-4 CAA).

Sophomore Jason Maxey (Columbia, Md.) and redshirt freshman Brian Jarosinski (Olney, Md.) hit back-to-back home runs in the third to put Maryland ahead for good, the first time Terp hitters launched consecutive bombs since April 7, 2001.

Maxey's home run is a positive sign for a Terrapin team that will head to Salem, Va. next week for the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. It was his first home run since March 18 after hitting 17 home runs last year as a freshman, and another indication that the catcher is progressing well from off-season hand surgery.

Freshman Mike Costantino (Somerset, Mass.) also went deep, his third of the year but second in four games, while sophomore Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.) weilded the dagger with a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth.

Redshirt senior Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) added three hits, while senior Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.) went 2-for-3 in his return to the lineup after suffering a concussion last week.

Maryland heads to the ACC tournament in great shape offensively, setting season highs in home runs, runs scored, hits, and total bases, the latter of which was set in the team's second game of the year on Feb. 15 against then-No. 18 Stetson.

The Terps are also coming off a weekend in which they cranked out 27 hits and 17 runs against the fourth-best pitching staff in the nation - the No. 1 Florida State Seminoles.

Sophomore Chris Clem (Berwyn, Pa.) picked up his team-leading fifth win of the year, his only real mistake coming on a three-run home run to Yancey Jones in the second inning.

Fellow starter Sean Kane (West Chester, Pa.) went three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, and senior Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.) and sophomore Chris Bowen (Glenwood, Md.) combined for a scoreless ninth.

Forrest Cory (7-2) allowed five runs in three innings for just his second loss of the year.

After a week of exams, Maryland will travel to Salem, Va. to participate in the ACC tournament, beginning with the play-in game at 7:30 p.m. vs. Duke. Should Maryland advance, the tournament becomes double-elimination.

Game notes: William & Mary catcher Mike DeCarlo was ejected in the top of the eighth for arguing balls and strikes...DeCarlo was 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
