Women Save The Best For Last At Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's tennis team concluded play at the 2003 Maryland Invitational, sweeping two singles flights and one doubles flight.

Another beautiful day at the Tennis Center at College Park saw senior Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mi) repeat last years performance at the Maryland Invitational as she won the flight A singles title. Marker, who has earned a pre-season ITA ranking of 71, defeated Richmond's Beatrice Grasu, 6-3, 6-1.

Also in flight A, Jennifer Dent (Safety Harbor, Fla.) took third place as she defeated Richmond's Meghan Wolfgram, 6-2, 6-4.

Freshman Marianne Baker (Glenelg, Md.) and American's Sasha Zerkalova provided the crowd with a three set thriller as they battled for the flight B title. The first set was pushed to a tie break, which Baker won, 7-6 (5). Zerkalova responded by convincingly taking the second set, 6-2. However, in the end, Baker earned her first collegiate title, winning the third set, 7-5.

For fourth place in flight B, sophomore Andreea Fusea (Bucharest, Romania) faced off against Syracuses' Katie Bramante. Fusea, who won the flight C singles title at last years Maryland Invitational, came out on top, defeating Bramante, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (4).

In the backdraw of flight B, Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomblabreteche, France) was matched up against Cornell's Melissa Tu. Tu edged Chavardes in the first set, 6-4, but the Terp senior responded by winning the next two sets, 6-2, 6-3 for the win.

Masha Senic (Glenmont, N.Y.) faced off against Richmond's Robin Carter in the flight C finals. Carter came away with the title, dropping the Terp freshman 6-3, 6-2.

Doubles action saw Marker and Baker take the flight A singles title with a shut out of American's Julia Colarusso and Sasha Zerkalova, 8-0. In addition to the doubles title, Marker and Baker captured their respective singles flights.

Fusea and Senic defeated Syracuses' Ashley Lipton and Kendyl Serino, 8-2, for third place in flight B doubles.

Next stop for women's tennis is Pacific Palisades, California, where the Terps will play in the Riviera All American, October 7-12.
