Track Teams Compete Well at Penn State Invitational

Jan. 17, 2004

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The University of Maryland track teams competed at the Penn State Invitational Saturday, finishing fifth (women) and ninth (men) in the final team rankings. Tia Burley, Meghan Braffet and Kierra Foster all had individual victories for the women, while Rob Frelow and Harold Manning led the men's team.

Host school Penn State captured first-place honors in both the men's and women's meets. Rounding out the women's top five were Cornell, Villanova, Georgetown and the Terrapins.

Burley's victory came in the 400 meters with a time of 55.52, the team's fastest in the event this season. Braffet earned her second victory of the year, this time in the 5000 meters (17:19.03), while Foster was a winner in the long jump (20-00.50).

Other top-five finishers for the women were Teyarnte' Carter and Toni Jefferson, who each earned second-place honors. Carter's time of 7.53 in the 60 meters made her a runner-up while Jefferson ran the 200 meters in 24.47, also good for second-place.

Shenae Dawkins had two solid performances, finishing fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.85) and second in the triple jump (40-02.00), while Allison Carney (fifth, mile, 5:03.16) and Justine Kovacs (fifth, 3000 meters, 10:03.62) each posted team-best times.

The 4X400 relay team of Foster, Carter, Burley and Kristina Keegan finished fourth with a time of 3:52.09.

For the Terrapin men, Frelow (400 meters, 48.24) and Manning (200 meters, 21.48) each had second-place finishes. Manning's time in the 200 meters was a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships.

Peter Hess had a good showing in the mile race, finishing fourth and posting the team's fastest time this season in the event.

Also earning top-five finishes for the men's team was John Collins in the weight throw (fifth, 56-04.75) and the distance medley relay team of Mike Fleg, Chris Ader, Peter McDonald and Doug Allen (fifth, 10:22.72).

The track teams return to action next Saturday, Jan. 24, when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Invitational.
