Maryland Women's Basketball Wins Season Opener

BOONE, N.C. - No. 24 Maryland women's basketball opened the 2004-05 season with a 94-74 win at Appalachian State on Friday night. All five starters scored in double figures with freshman Crystal Langhorne netting 25 points and seven rebounds to lead the team.

The Terps (1-0) shot 61.9 percent from the field, including 67.9 percent in the second half, to win their sixth-consecutive season opener. Making her Maryland debut, Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) was 11-for-14 from the field, en route to team-high 25 points. Sophomore Shay Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) added 20 points in the Terps' cause, going 8-for-13 from the field and 2-for-3 from behind the three-point arc.

With Maryland holding onto a 10-8 lead with 15:37 on the clock, the Terps went on an 11-2 run over a three-minute span, capped of by a Doron three-pointer at the 12:24 mark, to widen its lead to 11 at 21-10.

Appalachian State came to within three points at 21-18 with 10:30 remaining in the opening frame, but Maryland opened up a 47-27 halftime lead, as Langhorne tallied nine of her 13 first-half points to put help put the Terps out in front.

The Terps led by as many as 26 points early in the second half, but ASU started to get hot from the floor, slicing a 55-29 Maryland lead to a 69-61 advantage with 8:11 remaining in the contest when Whitney Tossie converted the lay-up after a steal.

The Mountaineers Lindsay Smith scored 17 of her game-high 28 points during that key 10-minute stretch, including three treys and a key four-point play from the right baseline.

Doron's three-pointer from the top of the key immediately following a Maryland timeout with 8:11 remaining in the game started a 23-4 run, pushing the Terps' lead to 92-65 to put the game out of reach.

Also in double-digits for Maryland were sophomore Kalika France (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) with 14 and freshman Laura Harper (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) who had 12 in her collegiate debut. Senior Anesia Smith (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) was an assist shy of a double-double, tallying 10 points and dishing out nine assists, tying her career high.

The 891 fans in attendance marked the highest attendance figure for a women's basketball game in the Holmes Center.

Maryland comes home for its home opener, hosting Siena on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m.
