CHARLESTON, S.C. -
The University of Maryland baseball team suffered another tough loss in South Carolina, falling to the Charleston Southern University Buccaneers 10-9 in the 11th inning. The Terps held a 9-5 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to close out the game.
Freshman Mike Sharkevich struggled in his collegiate debut, trying secure the win for the Terrapins. After their first batter flied out, the Buccaneers loaded the bases on Sharkevich. Kevin Hart, who had been the Terps' designated hitter during the game, then came in to try and get out of the jam.
Hart walked his first batter, scoring a run. After striking out the next batter, Hart was matched up against Charleston Southern's catcher Scott Thacker. Thacker then hit a bases-clearing double to the wall in center field which tied the game.
In the bottom of the 11th, Hart sat down the first two batters he faced. He then struck out Brad Woods swinging, but Woods was able to reach first on the wild pitch. After Woods stole second base, Graham Maiden took advantage and knocked him in for the game-winning run with a single up the middle.
Terrapin starter Chris Clem got into some trouble early in the game, giving up five runs in the first inning. Four straight Buccaneer batters had RBI hits, and they added another run later in the inning on a fielder's choice.
After working his way through the first, Clem settled down and shut down the Bucs for the next six innings. After his first inning troubles, Clem gave up just three hits and no additional runs in his final six innings. He finished the game with five runs allowed on eight hits and one walk in seven innings of work.
Maryland took the lead in the fourth with a big inning at the plate, scoring five runs on four hits. Mike Costantino and Dan Melvin started the inning off with a pair of singles. Brian Jarosinski then brought them home, hitting a three-run home run over the left field wall. The Terps took a 5-6 lead later in the inning when Anthony Buffone knocked in Bobby Ryan and Truan Mehl with a single to left. Buffone added his first stolen base of the season later in the inning.
Mehl led off the sixth inning with a single, and later came around to score when Buffone grounded into a fielder's choice. Singletary gave the Terps two more runs with a home run to left center, the first of his career at Maryland.
Justin Hulse pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the eighth, striking out one batter and allowing one hit. Jarosinski finished the game with a career-high four RBI on two hits. Clem tied his career-high with seven strikeouts in the game.
