TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -
The University of Maryland baseball team was defeated by Florida State University tonight, 16-6. The Terps' loss in their ACC opener snapped a six-game win streak heading into the series.
Florida State (18-5) took a lead over the Terps (9-8) early in the game, scoring six runs in the first inning. The big inning for the Seminoles was highlighted by a grand slam from Florida State's Ryne Malone.
After the Seminoles added on two additional runs in the third inning, Maryland responded by scoring a run of their own in the fourth. Senior Anthony Buffone led off the inning with a double to right field and sophomore Mike Costantino knocked him in later in the inning with an RBI-single.
The Terrapins scored another run in the sixth inning with Costantino hitting another RBI single. Junior Kevin Hart, who started on the mound for the Terps, led off the inning with a single and scored on Costantino's hit.
Maryland did not quit after falling behind 13-2, battling to put up four more runs in the eighth inning. Junior Elliot Singletary and Buffone led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After junior Jason Maxey walked to load the bases, sophomore Brian Jarosinski hit a three-run triple deep to center field. Jarosinski came around to score two batters later when freshman Dan Melvin hit a double to left.
Three Terrapins had three players with multiple hits in the game. Junior Will Frazier, Buffone and Costantino each had a pair of hits.
Junior Josh Andrews relieved the Terps' starter, Hart, in the sixth inning. Andrews pitched one inning and allowed just one hit. Freshmen Chris McCafferty and Mike Sharkevich each made their ACC debuts, coming out of the bullpen. Junior Brooks Norris also made a relief appearance in the seventh inning.
Maryland will face off against the Seminoles again tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla., at Dick Howser Stadium.
