Terrapin Baseball Earns Win Over Rams, 9-7

BOWIE, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team earned a 9-7 victory over Virginia Commonwealth University tonight at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md. Terrapin starter junior Chris Bowen earned his third win of the season and the Terrapin pitching staff recorded 15 strikeouts against the Rams.

Bowen recorded a career high nine strikeouts against Virginia Commonwealth (17-11). Sophomore Seth Overbey and junior Justin Hulse added another six strikeouts in relief for the Terps (12-12). Hulse came out of the bullpen in the eighth inning to earn his second save of the season.

Maryland started off strong at the plate, taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Jason Maxey started the Terps with an RBI single to bring in sophomore Matt Maropis. Later in the inning, junior Will Frazier hit a three-run shot for his third home run of the season.

The Terrapins had another explosive performance at the plate in the fourth inning. After Frazier scored when junior Elliot Singletary reached on a fielder's choice, senior Anthony Buffone knocked in another run with an RBI single.

The Terps continued their production in the inning by loading the bases with two outs. Junior Kevin Hart then delivered a run with a double down the right field line and Maxey brought in another two with a double of his own.

Buffone and Maxey each went 3-for-4 at the plate against the Rams. Buffone scored a pair of runs and had one RBI while Maxey knocked in a season-high three RBI and scored one as well.

Maryland is set to travel to Newark, Del., tomorrow to take on the University of Delaware at Bob Hannah Stadium at 2:30 p.m.
