Box Score

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Maryland baseball team defeated the University of Delaware by a score of 9-6 this afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium in Newark, Del. The Terps scored a run in each of the first five innings.

The Terrapins (13-12) recorded 16 hits against the Fightin' Blue Hens (13-12) and scored in seven different innings. Eight of the nine Terrapin batters in the game recorded at least one hit against Delaware.

Maryland got on the scoreboard in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Matt Maropis led off the game with a single and came around to score later in the inning on junior Jason Maxey's single. The Terps brought in another run in the second with Maropis recording the RBI by knocking in freshman Dan Melvin.

Junior Kevin Hart led off the third inning with a double down the right field line. He came around to score when junior Will Frazier hit a single to center. The Terps tacked on another run in the fourth with junior Truan Mehl scoring as junior Elliot Singletary doubled deep to center field. Mehl stole second base before coming around for his fifth of the season.

Starting on the mound for the Terrapins, sophomore Ben Pfinsgraff pitched 4.2 innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out four batters. He was able to work his way out of a jam in the fourth inning, allowing just one run, by striking out one Blue Hen Batter and getting another to ground out after Delaware had loaded the bases with one out in the inning.

Melvin doubled down the left field line in the fifth inning to bring Frazier across the plate, giving the Terrapins a 5-1 lead. After Delaware cut that lead by one, junior Josh Andrews got the call from the bullpen for Maryland. Andrews struck out three batters and allowed just on earned run in 2.2 innings of work. The earned run was the first of the season for Andrews.

After the Blue Hens scored two runs in the sixth inning, Maryland responded by scoring a pair of their own in the top of the seventh. Frazier led off the inning with a single and Maxey followed that up with a double to right center. They each scored in the inning with sophomore Brian Jarosinski and Melvin each recording an RBI.

Freshman Dan Waters made a relief appearance in the eighth inning, facing two batters. Junior Justin Hulse relieved Waters in the eight and worked his way out of a jam. With inherited runners on second and third and no outs, Hulse struck out the each of the three batters he faced to get out of the inning.

The Terrapins expanded their lead in the top of the ninth inning, scoring two runs on Delaware. Maryland had loaded the bases with one out in the inning and Maropis took advantage, knocking in two runs with a single down the left side.

Maropis was solid at the plate, recording three hits with three RBI. Melvin and Frazier each went 3-for-3 with Melvin knocking in two runs with a stolen base and Frazier notching one RBI. Andrews earned the win on the mound for the Terps, and Hulse picked up his third save of the season.

The Terrapins will be in action next when they travel to Clemson, S.C., on Friday, April 2, to begin a three-game series with Clemson University.
