Maryland's Ramona But Falls in NCAA Singles Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland sophomore Ramona But was defeated by Duke University's Amanda Johnson in the first round of the NCAA Individual Singles Championships on Monday. The championships were held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

But, ranked twenty-sixth by the ITA, was edged 7-5 by the Blue Devil's senior in the first set. Johnson, the seventh-seed in the tournament, eighth-ranked overall, secured the win over But with a convincing 6-1 win in the second set.

Johnson and But met earlier this season when Maryland and Duke met in conference action on April 3. Johnson defeated But 6-4, 6-1 in the top singles spot.

But's overall record was 19-7 and her spring dual match record was a team-best 14-6. In conference action this season, the two-time All-ACC award winner, finished with a team-high seven wins.
