April 20, 2005

Final Stats

BALTIMORE, Md. - Down 2-0 after seven innings, Maryland chipped away with runs in the eighth and ninth innings before breaking through in the 11th inning and coming away with a 3-2 win over UMBC. Elliot Singletary tied the game with an RBI double in the ninth and scored the game-winning run on a two-out RBI single by Will Frazier in the top of the 11th. Winners of two straight and three of four, the Terps will head into a home weekend series against Wake Forest with an 18-22 overall record and a 5-16 mark in conference play.

Brian Jarosinski and Matt Maropis each scored runs in the game, and Chad Durakis led the team with three hits in five at-bats.

Mike Sufczynski started the game for the Terps and got a no-decision for his third straight start. He gave up just three hits and one earned run over 4.2 innings and struck out four batters. He gave way to Justin Hulse with the Terps down 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Hulse came in with runners on second and third and two outs in the fifth inning and got a key fly out to end the threat. He worked hitless sixth and seventh innings and allowed just one base runner to keep the Terps in the game.

Both Sufczynski and UMBC starter kept runs off the board through the first four innings, with UMBC putting two across in the fifth for the first runs of the game. Joe Fowler got the fifth inning started for the Retrievers, drawing a leadoff walk. He moved to second on a single by Steve Russo, to third on a throwing error by Jason Von Behren and scored on a single to center field by Ian Carman. Russo would come around to score an unearned run on an RBI groundout by Mike Scheffel.

The Terps got one back in the seventh, as Brian Jarosinski came around to score the team's first run of the game. Jarosinski led off the inning with a hit by pitch, and then moved to second on a wild pitch by Blake Phipps. After moving to third on a fly ball to right field by Chad Durakis, Jarosinski came across on another Phipps wild pitch.

Elliot Singletary came through with an RBI double in the ninth inning to tie the game off Phipps, scoring Matt Maropis from first base. Maropis led off the inning with a line drive single to center field, bringing up Singletary who was looking to sacrifice Maropis into scoring position. Phipps threw three straight balls to bring the count to 3-1, and the UMBC defense, expecting a bunt, brought third baseman Mark Lemon in. Singletary pulled back and ripped a Phipps fastball down the left field line, and Maropis came around to score from first base.

Terp reliever Michael Meagher took the game into extra innings with a scoreless 1.1 innings, and Maryland was the first to capitalize on an opportunity with a runner in scoring position in the 11th.

Singletary drew a one-out walk and moved into scoring position on a groundout by Truan Mehl, bringing up Will Frazier with two outs. Frazier worked a 2-2 count, and then hit a Dan Blewett offering down the third base line. The ball hit the lip of the infield grass and bounced over Mark Lemon at third base. Singletary, running all the way, scored on the play, before Frazier was thrown out trying to leg out a double.

Seth Overbey worked a scoreless 10th, and then picked up the win by stranding a runner on second base in the 11th. Zach Clark led off with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt, but Overbey got a fly out and strike out to close out the game.
