Final Stats
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Terp offense put up impressive numbers, but a Mike Scheffel home run in the top of the ninth broke a 7-7 tie and gave UMBC a 9-7 win on Wednesday night. Matt Maropis tied career-highs with four hits and three RBI, and Will Frazier moved into a second place tie on the school's career extra-base hits list with a second-inning double. UMBC fought back from a 7-4 fifth-inning deficit with five unanswered runs to come away with its sixth win of the season.
Led by Maropis' big day, the Terp offense out-hit UMBC 13-12 and came within one of its season-high in doubles with six. Maropis had two doubles and four hits, raising his season average 40 points from .217 to .257 and improving to 7-for-9 with four doubles in his last three games.
Will Frazier had two hits and scored three runs in the game, extending his current hitting streak to 12 games and moving his career extra-base hits total to 80. He remains one extra-base hit shy of tying Paul Schager (1984-87) for first on the school's all-time extra-base hits list.
Earlier this week, Frazier became the second player in school history to record 200 career hits and 50 career doubles with two doubles at Georgia Tech.
Elliot Singletary also extended a hitting streak, going 3-for-4 for his sixth straight game with a hit. Two of those three hits were doubles, and Singletary, sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in doubles entering the game, moved his season total to a team-high 13. Singletary also walked to reach base a grand total of four times in the game.
Truan Mehl had two hits and drove in his eighth and ninth runs in the last 11 games. Mehl has had at least two hits in three straight games, moving his season batting average to its highest point in a month (.366 on Mar. 6).
Mike Scheffel hit two home runs in the game for UMBC and had three RBI. Scheffel's two homers were part of a 12-hit UMBC offensive attack - just the second time in the last 10 non-conference games that Maryland pitchers gave up more than 10 hits.
Just like the first meeting between the two teams, UMBC jumped out to an early lead with three second-inning runs. Joe Fowler hit an RBI single up the middle to score Alex Laddbush from third base, and leadoff hitter scored a pair of runs with a two-run single.
Maryland chipped away in the bottom half of the inning after a pair of doubles by Will Frazier and Matt Maropis. Frazier led off the inning with a double off the left field wall, bringing himself into a second place tie on the Maryland career extra-base hits list (80). Maropis followed with his fifth double and RBI of the season.
The Terps broke out and took the lead with a big four-run third inning. Nick Jowers got things started with a leadoff triple, and Elliot Singletary brought him around with his team-leading 12th double of the season. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Singletary tied the game up at 3-3 on an RBI groundout by Dan Melvin. With the bases empty, Truan Mehl sparked another rally with a double to right field. Will Frazier scored Mehl with his hit of the game, then advanced to second when catcher Chad Durakis was hit by a pitch. Matt Maropis followed with his second RBI base hit of the game, scoring Frazier for the Terps' fourth run of the inning and a 5-3 lead through three innings.
Maryland tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth innings to go up 7-4 after five complete. Truan Mehl scored Joe Palumbo with an RBI groundout in the fourth, and Matt Maropis drove in Will Frazier with his second double of the game.
UMBC erased the Terps' three-run lead with runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Shortstop Alex Socarras scored an unearned run in the fifth, Mike Scheffel homered in the sixth and Kyle Wildasin scored on an RBI double by Alex Laddbush to even the score at 7-7.
Seth Overbey came on in relief of Brett Tidball with two outs in the seventh and left a man in scoring position with a big strikeout.
The Terp offense couldn't generate any offense off UMBC reliever Blake Phipps, who gave up nine hits and seven runs in the teams' previous meeting. Phipps got the loss the first time around, but pitched 3.0 scoreless innings and got his second win of the season after Scheffel's two-run game-winner in the ninth. Seth Overbey got the loss to move to 0-1 on the season.
Maryland will look to bounce back when it hosts a three-game conference set with No. 7 North Carolina this weekend. Chris Clem, who is one strikeout shy of 200 for his career, is expected to face preseason All-America choice Andrew Miller in Friday's series opener (7 p.m. at Shipley Field).
