Senior outfielder
Truan Mehl and junior left-hander
Michael Meagher became the second and third Terrapin selections in the 2005 Major League Draft on Wednesday. Mehl was selected in the 30th round by the Texas Rangers and Meagher in the 43rd by the St. Louis Cardinals. They joined
Justin Maxwell, who was drafted in the fourth round by the Washington Nationals, as the Terps' three draft picks of 2005.
Mehl was chosen with the 19th pick of the 30th round and the 909th overall. Mehl led the team in 2005 with a .345 average and 82 hits and finished second with 114 total bases, a .397 on-base percentage and 13 stolen bases. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior from Overland Park, Kan. started all 56 games in the Maryland outfield last season and, with good speed and a strong arm, project as a center fielder at the next level.
Meagher was chosen with the last pick in the 30th round by the defending National League champion St. Louis Cardinals. The junior left-hander made 15 appearances out of the bullpen in his only season with the Terps and had a team-best 1.53 earned run average. He saved five games and allowed opponents to hit just .197. Meagher has a closer's mentality and features a fastball that can touch 90 miles per hour and a plus-slider that he can throw for a strike at any time.
Maxwell was the only Terrapin player to be selected on the first day of the 2005 draft, going in the fourth round to the Washington Nationals. A two-time preseason All-America selection and the Atlantic Coast Conference's best athlete and defensive outfielder (according to Baseball America) heading into 2005, Maxwell possesses some of the nation's best physical tools. The junior outfielder has had a tough time staying healthy the past two seasons, playing in just seven games, but was still worthy of a fourth-round pick by the hometown Nationals.
2005 signee, John Dischert, a 6-foot-5 left-handed pitcher from St. Mark's High School in Wilmington, Del. was also selected on the second day of the draft. Dischert, still competing in Delaware's high school state playoffs, went in the 42nd round to the Philadelphia Phillies (1264th overall pick).
