Maryland Swimmers Advance to Finals in Day Two of Terp Cup

    The preliminary session in day two of the Terrapin Cup Invitational included the: 400-yard individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and women's 1 meter diving. Several Maryland swimmers have advanced to the finals in these events, set to take place tonight.

    For the women, freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) started the morning session with a ninth-place finish in the 400 IM (4:29.81) and junior Kirsten Jones will also swim in the 400 IM finals after placing 12th (4:31.11).

    Maryland will have four women swimming in finals for the 100 butterfly. Freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the Terps with a third-place finish (56.71) followed by Rossi in 14th (57.50), freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) in 10th (57.13), and senior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) in 14th place (57.41).

    Freshman Jackie Davidson (Beverly, Mass.) advanced to the finals in the 200 free, placing 22nd with a time of 1:53.73. Sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) earned an alternate position in the event after a 26th-place finish (1:53.94) this morning.

    Junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) placed 20th in the 100 breast (1:07.49) and will swim the event tonight. Junior Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) tied for 24th with Suzanne Figuers of William and Mary (1:07.59) in the 100 breast.

    Three Terps will swim in the finals of the 100 back. Freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.) swam to second place in the prelims (56.31). Davidson also advanced with a 12th-place finish (58.10) and senior Natalie Ferdinand placed 15th (58.44).

    Finals for this morning's events will begin at 6:30 pm at Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center. In addition, the 800 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay will take place during the finals session.
