The Maryland women's swimming and diving team is currently in fourth place after the conclusion to the second day of the Terrapin Cup Invitational. West Virginia is in the lead on the women's side. Tonight's session included the 200-yard medley relay and 800 freestyle relay in addition to finals in the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.
The night opened with the 200 medley relay. The Maryland team of senior Natalie Ferdinand (St. Thomas, Barbados), junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.), Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) notched a second-place finish with a time of 1:46.42. In the 800 free relay, Maryland also finished in second with freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y), Skalinskaya, freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.), and freshman Jackie Davidson (Beverly, Mass.) swimming a 7:30.24.
In the 400 IM, Maryland had two swimmers advance to the finals. Junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) was the top finisher for the Terps with a season-high time (4:28.84). Freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J) came in 12th place (4:30.21).
Four Terps swam in the finals for the 100 fly. Freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) led Maryland with a fifth-place finish and season-high time (56.57). Vogel came in ninth place (56.77) followed by deToll in 12th (57.08) and Rossi in 16th (58.04).
Davidson swam the 200 free in the finals session, placing 21st with a time of 1:53.44. In the 100 breast, junior Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) led the Terps in 19th (1:07.24) followed by Smoak in 20th (1:07.38).
Lehner had an impressive finish in the 100 back, taking third with a season-high time 56.34 followed by Davidson in 13th with a 58.26.
Tomorrow marks the last day of this year's Terrapin Cup Invitational. Preliminary competition will begin at 10:00 am in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and men's 3 meter diving. Following these events will be preliminaries for the 1650 free, starting at 2:00 pm. Finals for these events along with the 400 free relay will begin at 6:30 pm.
