Sasha Malanina made it a day to remember as she took home the silver medal in tonight's finals for the 200 IM in the ACC Championships. The junior from Volgograd, Russia, set a career mark by finishing in 2:01.54. The time bested her previous career-high, set this morning in the event's prelims, by 2.3 seconds. Her time in the final was good for an NCAA B-cut.
Although Malanina was the only Terp to medal on the day, there were several other noteworthy Terrapin performances in the finals. The 200 free relay team of freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan), sophomore Maya Finkler (Rishon-le-zion, Israel), junior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.), and senior Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.) set a season record for the Terps in the event, finishing in 1:32.64 to take fourth place. The time qualified for an NCAA B-cut.
Skalinskaya earned an individual B-cut time with her seventh-place finish in the 50 free. She finished in 23.44, trailed closely by Finkler, who finished eighth in 23:59.
Sumrall had a highlight of her own, finishing tenth in the 50 free. Her time of 23.38 was a career best, eclipsing her record of 23.74 that she set in this morning's prelims. With the race, Sumrall qualified for an NCAA B-cut.
Senior Inbal Levavi (Kibutz Givat Haim, Israel) won the consolation heat of the 200 IM, earning yet another NCAA B-cut time for the Terps with her time of 2:04.18.
The Terrapins finished the day in sixth place in the 11-team event. Their total of 149 trailed the leader, North Carolina, by 49 points.
Competition in the ACC Championships continues tomorrow from the Natatorium of the Campus Recreation Center in College Park. The morning's events begin at 11 a.m.
